Tashkent, Uzbekistan (UzDaily.uz) — Uzbek President Shavkat Mirziyoyev has called for faster implementation of a system allowing citizens to cross the border with Tajikistan using ID cards. He said growing freight traffic between the two countries demonstrated the need to resolve the issue. The president made the remarks during a meeting with Tajik Foreign Minister Sirojiddin Muhriddin.
Mirziyoyev said developing relations with Tajikistan had been a priority since the beginning of his presidency. The two sides had made substantial progress in strengthening bilateral ties, he added.
“Previously, the borders were closed. Trade turnover was not at the level we see today, and our relations were not this close. We also need to accelerate the introduction of an ID card-based border crossing system,” the president said.
He stressed that the increase in freight traffic created a practical need to simplify border crossing procedures.
In November 2024, plans were reported to introduce the option of entering Tajikistan from Uzbekistan using an ID card.
