Nigeria Democratic Congress members in the diaspora have demanded strong representation for them in the proposed Obi–Kwankwaso Presidential Campaign Council (PCC), warning that internal rivalry could undermine the Nigeria Democratic Congress chances in the 2027 elections.
The Sweden Chapter of the NDC which made the demand through its Chairman, Ikeagwuonwu Chinedu Klinsmann, said the planned October 20 inauguration of the campaign council must mark the beginning of a united political movement rather than merely the unveiling of campaign officials.
Klinsmann, in a statement, called on the NDC national leadership to establish a coordinated diaspora mobilisation and international engagement structure to harness the professional expertise, networks, technology and resources of Nigerians living abroad.
The Sweden chapter chairman of NDC argued that the diaspora members of the party should be treated as a strategic partner in the campaign, not an afterthought, urging the party to integrate its chapters across Europe, North America, Africa, Asia-Pacific and the Middle East into a unified national strategy.
Klinsmann warned that parallel structures, personal ambitions and avoidable disagreements could distract the party from the task of mobilising Nigerians for the 2027 presidential election.
He called for dialogue and reconciliation to resolve internal disputes, insisting that no individual’s ambition should take precedence over the party’s collective mission.
“The campaign must prioritise organisation, grassroots mobilisation, policy credibility, technology, voter education and election protection rather than personalities alone.
He urged presidential candidate Peter Obi to sustain his focus on production, prudent management of public resources, security, education, healthcare, employment and accountable governance.
Supporting cooperation among opposition forces, the NDC diaspora leader however said any coalition must be driven by principles and a shared national agenda rather than the distribution of political offices.
He said the 2027 election should go beyond a contest for political power to a debate about how to address the country’s economic difficulties, restore public confidence and move Nigeria from consumption to production nation.
