A 40-year-old man, Samson Ekata, arrested over the alleged murder of his eight-month-pregnant girlfriend in Uromi, Edo state, has claimed that strange voices instructed him to kill her.
Ekata, who was paraded alongside other criminal suspects by the Edo state Police Command on Wednesday, alleged that he initially resisted the instruction because his girlfriend was pregnant but later acted on it after experiencing a similar instruction in a dream.
The suspect reportedly lived with the deceased for about a year before the incident, during which he allegedly killed her, mutilated her body and attempted to remove her unborn baby.
Speaking with journalists at the police Command headquarters, Ekata claimed that he had never killed anyone before the incident.
“The strange voices began instructing him to kill my girlfriend, but I initially refused to act on them because of her pregnancy.
“The instruction returned in a dream about two weeks later, after which I carried out the killing,” the suspect stated.
He also admitted to severing one of the victim’s breasts, claiming that a spirit had instructed him to do so.
He further disclosed that he transported the woman’s body in a Toyota Corolla before dumping it by the roadside.
Ekata, however, denied involvement in any other killing, insisting that the incident was his first.
The Commissioner of Police, Patrick Daaor, described the killing as horrific and expressed sadness over the death of the pregnant woman.
Daaor commended members of the community for providing information that assisted the police in arresting the suspect.
He assured that Ekata, who remains in police custody, would face the full weight of the law.
The police commissioner also urged residents to continue providing useful information to security agencies to help curb crime across the state.
He advised parents to pay closer attention to the safety of their children, particularly girls, warning that vulnerable persons could be exploited by sexual predators and other dangerous individuals.
Daaor further urged young women to exercise caution in their relationships and prioritise their personal safety.
The Commissioner reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and called for sustained cooperation between residents and security agencies.
