In a major stride towards strengthening the power infrastructure of South Tripura and ensuring reliable electricity supply in remote and border areas, Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath on Wednesday inaugurated two newly constructed 132 KV sub-stations at Sabroom and Satchand. Built at a combined cost of approximately Rs 113.92 crore, the projects are expected to significantly improve the quality, stability and reliability of power services for 37,548 electricity consumers across the region.
The Minister described the twin projects as a landmark development in the state's ongoing efforts to modernise its electricity network and meet growing demand. Implemented through Power Grid Corporation of India Limited with financial assistance from the Government of India and the World Bank, the projects are aimed at enhancing transmission capacity, reducing system constraints and delivering uninterrupted electricity to households, commercial establishments and public institutions.
The larger of the two projects, the 132 KV Sabroom Sub-Station, has been developed at an expenditure of around Rs 66.19 crore. Construction work commenced in March 2021 and included the establishment of a full-fledged 132 KV sub-station along with a two-storey control room building. As part of the project, a 132 KV double-circuit transmission line was constructed from Belonia to Sabroom, integrating the new facility with the state's transmission network.
The Sabroom installation has been equipped with two 31.5 MVA 132/33 KV transformers and two 10 MVA 33/11 KV transformers. Through the newly established double-circuit transmission corridor, the sub-station has been linked with both Belonia and Satchand, creating a stronger and more resilient power transmission framework in the southern belt of the state.
According to the Minister, the commissioning of the Sabroom sub-station will substantially reinforce power distribution infrastructure in Sabroom and adjoining areas, resulting in better voltage regulation, enhanced reliability and improved consumer services. The project is expected to benefit 21,398 electricity consumers residing in Sabroom, Baishnabpur, Monughat, Harina, Bankul, the Integrated Check Post area, Ludhua, Rupaichari and neighbouring localities.
The second project, the 132 KV Satchand Sub-Station, has been constructed at a cost of approximately Rs 47.83 crore. Work on the facility began in January 2021 and was also executed by Power Grid Corporation of India Limited with support from the Government of India and the World Bank. The project involved the construction of a dedicated 132 KV sub-station, a two-storey control room building and the development of a transmission line connecting Satchand with Bokafa.
Similar to the Sabroom facility, the Satchand sub-station has been equipped with two 31.5 MVA 132/33 KV transformers and two 10 MVA 33/11 KV transformers. The newly constructed 132 KV double-circuit transmission line has integrated the sub-station with the power infrastructure at Bokafa and Sabroom, further strengthening grid connectivity in the region.
Highlighting the significance of the project, Ratan Lal Nath said the operationalisation of the Satchand sub-station would ensure a more dependable and efficient electricity supply system for residents of Satchand and surrounding areas. Apart from improving power service standards for consumers, the strengthened infrastructure is expected to support economic activities and contribute to the overall development of the region.
The Satchand project is expected to directly benefit 16,150 electricity consumers covering Satchand, Manubazar, Shakbari, Magurchara, Kalachara, Bhurakhali, Sindukpathar, Rajibnagar, Srinagar and nearby localities.
With the commissioning of the two strategically important sub-stations, South Tripura has received a substantial boost to its transmission and distribution network. Officials believe the upgraded infrastructure will play a crucial role in ensuring uninterrupted power supply, supporting future growth and enhancing the quality of life for thousands of consumers across the district.
