DIMAPUR: Naga Club has expressed concern over the ongoing tension between the Tikhir and Yimkhiung communities, stating that the recent violence was a stark reminder that society cannot afford to create new social faultlines at a time when divisions and uncertainty already loom large over the political future of the Nagas.
In a statement, the club observed that artificial territorial boundaries and narrow political interests have fragmented society and shaken the very core of the social fabric. It cautioned that violence arising from political differences has already caused significant damage to unity, and warned against transferring this culture of violence into the social space. The club emphasised that civil society organisations must channel their social capital towards fostering unity and oneness, providing leadership and healing, rather than becoming another source of fragmentation. “The utmost important factor is to stand together with unity of purpose,” it stated.
On the issue of overlapping land claims, the club noted that disagreements over boundaries are not uncommon but should never be allowed to escalate into conflict. Resorting to violence, it said, only creates disharmony and animosity that often get passed down from one generation to another. “Let us not be the generation responsible for passing down hatred,” the statement urged. It pointed out that the discord between the Tikhir and Yimkhiung communities also reflects their shared geographical space, which is permanent. Therefore, the club stressed that peaceful settlement through dialogue and legal procedures was the only way forward, and mutual respect must form the basis of any resolution.
The club further reminded that the two communities have long lived side by side and appealed that incidents of violence should not be allowed to define their relationship of brotherhood and friendship.
The Naga Club sincerely appealed to the Tikhir Tribal Council and the Yimkhiung Tribal Council to resolve their differences peacefully and continue to live together in harmony as brothers and neighbours, as in the past.
