South Africa is experiencing a varied atmospheric pattern on Tuesday, 13 October 2026, with spring conditions bringing a mix of sunshine, cloud cover, and active storm warnings across the entire country.
Clear skies and high temperatures in northern and central regions
Inland provinces are experiencing warm to hot weather under predominantly clear skies. Gauteng enjoys mostly clear conditions with Johannesburg reaching 30°C, while Limpopo sees warm weather peaking at 32°C in Polokwane. In Mpumalanga, Mbombela reaches the highest temperature in the region at 33°C. North West is experiencing cloudy skies, with Mahikeng sitting at 32°C.
According to the official forecast published on SAPeople, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued severe thunderstorm warnings for high-altitude areas in KwaZulu-Natal, including Underberg, Kokstad, Impendle, and Donnybrook. In KwaZulu-Natal, Durban sees a top temperature of 27°C alongside slight rain.
Official SAWS safety warnings and extended heatwave advisories
In a public advisory issued via the South African Weather Service, meteorologists alerted residents that heatwave conditions in the northwestern parts of KwaZulu-Natal remain in effect through Tuesday before gradually breaking down. Official SAWS updates further cautioned that yellow level 2 thunderstorm warnings carry potential risks of localised flooding, large hail, and strong winds, urging communities in low-lying areas and motorists on dirt roads to exercise heightened safety precautions.
Rain showers and coastal conditions across southern districts
The central and western interior are also seeing weather changes. Both the Free State and the Northern Cape face scattered afternoon showers and thundershowers, with Bloemfontein and Kimberley both reaching 27°C. Along the southern coastline, the Eastern Cape experiences slight rain and mild conditions in Gqeberha at 21°C. In the Western Cape, partly cloudy conditions prevail as Cape Town sees a moderate maximum of 21°C accompanied by coastal breezes.
