Caretaker Finance Minister Athian Ding Athian has traveled to Thailand for the 2026 IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings to seek financial support for South Sudan.
According to a statement issued by the Ministry of Finance and Planning, Athian is leading a government delegation for a week of discussions with representatives of the two international financial institutions and other global financial sector stakeholders.
The ministry said the minister is expected to hold bilateral meetings to present South Sudan’s economic needs and seek financial support for various sectors.
Athian is accompanied by the Governor of the Bank of South Sudan, Dr. Addis Ababa Othow, who is attending as an alternate governor, and the Undersecretary of Planning, Benjamin Ayali Koyongwa, alongside other senior officials.
The annual meetings bring together finance ministers, central bank governors, development partners and financial sector leaders to discuss the global economy, financial stability and development financing.
The visit comes as South Sudan faces economic challenges, including liquidity shortages and pressure to strengthen public finances, stabilize the economy and support development.
The meetings in Bangkok are expected to provide an opportunity for the government to engage international partners on financial assistance and economic cooperation.
