It can be a tough time of year for dog owners and their pets.
As Bonfire Night, Diwali, and Halloween celebrations approach the sky is set to be lit up by fireowks.
The crackle and bang of colourful pyrotechnics bring joy to many - but for countless dogs, they spark stress, panic, and anxiety.
More than 40 per cent of UK households include at least one dog, with over 4 million animals estimated to be afraid of fireworks.
To help out Alex Essex, from PBSR CO, has advised worried dog owners exactly how to identify when their pet is scared and how to keep them safe and calm.
Alex explained: “Although the flashes, bangs and bright colours can be exciting for humans, dogs find it incredibly hard to understand that they’re not in danger and therefore often find Bonfire Night stressful.”
Here’s his expert advice.
What are the signs of fear in dogs?
Fear isn't always obvious, so owners should keep an eye out for changes in their dog's usual behaviour. Signs can include:
- Trembling and shaking
- Small changes in their normal behaviour; not all dogs show such obvious signs
- Panting
- Toileting in the house
- Barking
- Cowering and hiding behind furniture
- Becoming unusually clingy
- Trying to run away or escape
- Destructive behaviour e.g. chewing furniture, scratching carpets
- Refusing to eat
- Pacing
- Other sudden changes in their normal behaviour
How to keep your dog safe and comfortable on Bonfire Night
From preparing things ahead of Bonfire night to creating a quiet retreat at home, there are several things that can be done for dogs to make fireworks less frightening.
Desensitise your dog to fireworks
In the weeks leading up to Bonfire Night, gently and slowly expose your dog to the sounds and sight of fireworks. There are lots of online videos of fireworks displays that can be played at low volume and slowly desensitise your dog to the noises of fireworks and prepare them for Bonfire Night. Gradually increase the volume over time to help them get used to the noise and reward generously with praise and their favourite treats.
Distract your dog
Keeping your dog occupied with a favourite toy, a puzzle feeder or a chew can help distract them from the noise outside. Interactive toys that require them to focus and problem solve can help take their mind off the fireworks.
Create a safe space
Set up a quiet, cosy area that your dog can retreat to if they’re feeling afraid or anxious. If they’re used to a crate set up, fill the crate with their favourite toys and soft blankets, or set up a quiet room far away from the noise. Make sure this space is easily accessible and comfortable, so your dog knows they have someone they can go where they feel safe.
Exercise before the nights events
On Bonfire Night, make sure your dog has had plenty of exercise during the day. A long walk or playing session will help burn off excess energy, making them more likely to be able to rest and settle during the evening.
Keep them indoors
During fireworks displays, keep your dog indoors to prevent them from getting spooked and bolting or getting injured. Make sure all windows and doors are closed and pull curtains closed to help muffle sounds and block out any flashing lights.
Stay calm and reassuring
Dogs are incredibly sensitive to our emotions, so it’s important to remain calm and reassuring during fireworks. If your dog can see that you are relaxed, they’re more likely to mirror that behaviour and feel safe. Comfort them if they’re frightened but try to not overreact as this can sometimes reinforce fearful behaviour.
Ensure they’re microchipped
Even with the most preparation, there is always a chance that a frightened dog might run. Make sure your dog is microchipped and that your contact details are up to date. This can make a huge difference in ensuring they’re returned to you swiftly if they do run away.
Put calming music on
Play classical music that lack sudden loud noises or repetitive heavy beats. Radio stations such as Classic FM host a ‘Pet Classics’ evening on Bonfire night which features soothing classical pieces to help calm your pet’s anxiety.
What to do the next morning
Some dogs remain a little afraid when the noise is over, so here are some final tips to bear in mind:
- Walk around your outdoor space before letting your dog out to check for any firework debris. Be sure to pick up any used fireworks, plastic casings and any other hazardous materials that could be left behind.
- Give your dog time to leave its hiding place as soon it feels safe and ready.
- Continue life as normal. Don’t make a big fuss of the fireworks ending.
- Fireworks can last for more than just one night, so be prepared for the unexpected fireworks that could go off in the days before and after Bonfire Night.
