Panama is checking the crew and hull of a ship under its flag after a US jet struck it near Iran.
Panama’s Maritime Authority has opened inquiries after a US fighter jet disabled the Panama-flagged ship Ocean Molica in the Gulf of Oman. US Central Command says the vessel was trying to run the American naval blockade of Iranian ports on Saturday, 10 October.
The case puts Panama, a close US partner whose flag flies on ships worldwide, inside Washington’s pressure campaign on Tehran. It matters to Americans because the blockade moves oil prices, shipping insurance and crew safety near the Strait of Hormuz.
What the US Says Happened
US Central Command (CENTCOM) runs American forces in the Middle East and enforces the blockade. It said one of its fighter jets hit the Ocean Molica’s stern with a precision munition, fully disabling its propulsion.
CENTCOM said the crew ignored repeated warnings after leaving an Iranian port and trying to transit regional waters. The command said nobody aboard was harmed, a claim Panama has not yet confirmed independently.
CENTCOM’s statement, posted on X on Saturday evening US time, said the ship is also known as Arika Sun. Neither CENTCOM nor Panama has published an IMO number, the unique identifier used to track ships.
CENTCOM said it has enforced its renewed blockade of all ships entering or leaving Iranian ports since 14 July. Over those three months, it reported disabling four commercial vessels, turning back 135 and destroying 10 tankers linked to Iran’s Revolutionary Guards.
Panama’s Response as Flag State
The Autoridad Marítima de Panamá (AMP) registers ships under Panama’s flag and supervises its merchant fleet. It said in a statement on Sunday evening that US Central Command forces had hit the vessel.
As flag state, meaning the country whose law governs the ship, Panama said it is querying the operator and other parties. Its Merchant Marine directorate is checking the health of every crew member and the ship’s structural condition.
The authority said the physical safety of seafarers is the absolute priority of the Panamanian state. It reminded the international fleet to follow two of its Merchant Marine Notices, MMN-04/2025 and MMN-05/2026.
The statement did not criticise Washington, name the owner or say what cargo the Panama-flagged ship carried. It also gave no crew numbers or nationalities and said its inquiries were ongoing.
Why the Case Matters for Panama’s Flag
Panama earns fees by letting foreign owners register ships under its flag, so its name appears on vessels worldwide. That business makes Panama a frequent party when navies stop or strike ships in conflict zones.
On Tuesday, 6 October, the AMP said Vietnamese shipowners reaffirmed confidence in its registry after meeting President José Raúl Mulino. The Ocean Molica case now tests how the registry balances that commercial appeal with its close security ties to Washington.
What It Means for You
For US investors, each blockade strike is a reminder that Gulf shipping risk can lift oil prices, freight rates and insurance premiums. Shipowners using Panama’s flag now face the same warning CENTCOM gave this crew: heed blockade instructions or risk a strike.
For US policy, the case shows Washington enforcing the blockade even against a ship flagged by a close partner in the Americas. Panama has so far responded with a technical flag-state review, not a diplomatic protest.
CENTCOM tells crews near Hormuz to monitor notice broadcasts and heed blockade warnings. It also asks them to call US naval forces on VHF channel 16 when operating in the Gulf of Oman.
What Is Not Known
Panama has not confirmed CENTCOM’s account that the crew ignored warnings or that nobody was hurt. The number of crew members, their nationalities, the owner, the cargo and the ship’s current position are not public.
It is also unclear whether the ship will be towed, repaired or detained. Panama has not said whether its inquiry could lead to action against the operator or the vessel’s removal from its registry.
What Comes Next
The AMP said its flag-state inquiries are ongoing, and La Estrella reported it will keep following the case. Further statements from the authority or CENTCOM would be the first official word on the crew and the ship’s fate.
The inquiry does not mean Panama is challenging the US blockade or the legality of the strike. The authority said it is following the protocols that apply to it as flag state of the Panama-flagged ship.
