Jaden McDaniels has secured a one-year, $40 million contract extension from the Minnesota Timberwolves, according to his agency, which filtered the report through ESPN’s Shams Charania.
The additional year is on top of the five-year, $131 million deal he signed in 2024. That means he’s signed with Minnesota through the 2029-30 season, at which point he’ll have a chance to enter free agency as a 10-year veteran.
As Charania reported, the extension creates “flexibility to negotiate another extension as early as 2028 at a starting salary of up to 140% of the new higher $40M salary.” Do the math, and you’ll find that 140% of $40 million is $56 million. If the shoe fits, that’s what McDaniels could earn annually in his next big contract.
McDaniels, 26, averaged 14.6 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 2.6 assists per game while shooting 51.5% overall and 41.2% from three-point range last season.
He’s expected to carry more of the offense this season after Julius Randle and Naz Reid were traded in the offseason. The top two scoring options are Anthony Edwards and then LaMelo Ball, with McDaniels and Jonathan Kuminga slotting in as the third and fourth scoring options in the starting lineup.
The Timberwolves open the regular season Wednesday night at Miami.
