(ANSA) - ROME, 22 OTT - Justice Minister Carlo Nordio said Thursday that organized crime probably has a hand in the truckers protests that have caused huge disruption in southern Italy this week.
"I would say there is a strong possibility of exploitation and infiltration into the truckers' protests," Nordio told Sky Tg24.
"It is highly probable that they (the Camorra) are present, capable of infiltrating, and likely to exploit this situation." The Naples Public Prosecutor's Office has opened a preliminary investigation to determine whether organized crime has played a role in the protests.
Several truck drivers reported being subjected to pressure and, in some cases, threats from masked individuals to make them take part in the protest.
Some drivers have reported their truck tires being slashed.
