The Federal High Court in Katsina has adjourned the case involving Dr Bashir Kurfi, a security analyst and university lecturer, to November 4, 2026 to allow his counsel to respond to a counter-affidavit filed by the respondents.
Counsel to Kurfi, A.D. Umar, disclosed this to journalists shortly after Tuesday’s proceedings, saying the first and third respondents served the defence with the counter-affidavit on Monday evening.
He said the defence needed time to study the document and prepare a response.
“Unfortunately, counsel to the first and third respondents served us with their counter-affidavit yesterday evening, so there is a need for us to respond,” Umar said.

He added that after notifying the court, the matter was adjourned to November 4 for definite hearing.
Meanwhile, the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has expressed solidarity with Kurfi, with a delegation attending the proceedings to show support for the lecturer.
Dahiru Rabe, chairman of the ASUU branch at the Federal University Dutsin-Ma (FUDMA), said he attended the court session on behalf of the union’s Sokoto Zonal Coordinator.
He said the union wanted justice to be served without unnecessary delay.
“We are here to show our solidarity with one of us who has been dragged into this litigation. We want justice to be done,” he said.
Rabe added that the union was concerned about ensuring a fair and timely resolution of the case.
“Delaying justice is denying justice,” he said.
Kurfi, a former lecturer at Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, is facing legal proceedings over allegations of defamation and injurious falsehood relating to comments about the Katsina State Government and the 2026 Hajj pilgrimage.
He had previously pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The case has been adjourned to November 4, 2026, for further hearing.
