Shreyas Iyer will captain India in the final two matches of their five-match ODI series in New Zealand, while Shubman Gill will lead the side in the first three ODIs and the two Tests, the BCCI announced on Friday.
Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have been named in both ODI squads. Iyer will serve as Gill’s deputy for the opening three matches, with Ishan Kishan taking over as vice-captain for the fourth and fifth ODIs.
The BCCI did not specify why Gill and KL Rahul, who are in the squad for the first three ODIs, were not included for the final two.
Tilak Varma, Auqib Nabi, Kumar Kushagra and Yash Thakur come into the squad for the fourth and fifth matches. Gill, Rahul, Anshul Kamboj and Prasidh Krishna feature only in the squad for the opening three games. Prasidh’s ODI inclusion is subject to fitness clearance.
Naman Dhir and Gurnoor Brar have been selected for all five ODIs, alongside Nitish Kumar Reddy, Axar Patel, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj and Kuldeep Yadav.
In Tests, Rahul has been named vice-captain, while wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant’s participation is subject to fitness clearance. Dhruv Jurel is the other wicketkeeper in the 16-member squad.
Jasprit Bumrah will lead a pace attack that also includes Siraj, Prasidh, Akash Deep and Kamboj. Ravindra Jadeja, Washington Sundar and Kuldeep provide the spin options.
