Two whistleblowers have emerged as key figures in an investigation into alleged bribery and match-fixing in Greek basketball, with the case threatening to trigger major changes at the Greek Basketball Federation.
According to Eurohoops, two individuals who allegedly received bribes approached Greek authorities and offered detailed testimony in exchange for full amnesty and protected-witness status.
Their accounts have reportedly proved particularly significant to the sports prosecutor, who is investigating what could become one of the biggest corruption scandals in Greek basketball.
The investigation began in April 2026 after a complaint involving Marousi BC was submitted to prosecutors. Authorities have since examined nine witnesses, according to reports.
The case escalated with the reported arrest of Greek Basketball Federation president Vaggelis Liolios and five other individuals, including EuroLeague referee Vasiliki Tsaroucha.
All allegations remain subject to the judicial process.
Around 50 games under suspicion
Investigators are reportedly examining approximately 50 basketball games suspected of being fixed. So far, only two are said to involve Greece’s top division.
One of the matches under scrutiny was reportedly a final played in Cyprus involving junior teams from Greek schools.
The investigation has also drawn attention to a reported €820,000 discovered at the home of one of the arrested individuals. Authorities are reportedly examining the source of the money and whether it can be lawfully justified.
The six arrested individuals are expected to appear before a criminal investigator, who will assess the evidence and determine whether charges should be brought or whether the suspects should be released.
Under Greek law, detention may also be ordered if the legal requirements are met.
Federation faces potential leadership shake-up
The investigation could have major consequences for the Greek Basketball Federation if Liolios is formally charged.
According to the report, the federation’s board would have 15 days to appoint a replacement. If it fails to do so, the sports minister could intervene, potentially dismissing the entire board and triggering new elections.
Liolios was first elected federation president in 2021 and won re-election in 2026. The alleged bribery and match-fixing investigation covers the period from 2016 to 2026.
Sports minister calls for transparency
Greek Sports Minister Giannis Vroutsis said the allegations were deeply concerning, particularly because they reportedly involve people holding institutional positions within basketball administration and officiating.
He stressed that the investigation was now in the hands of the judicial authorities and urged all parties to respect the confidential process.
Vroutsis also revealed that the case followed evidence submitted to the public prosecutor on April 21, 2026, by the National Platform for Sports Integrity, known as EPATHLA.
The platform was established by the Sports Ministry to help identify and combat match-fixing.
The minister said the case demonstrated that institutional mechanisms designed to protect sporting integrity were operating, adding that sport must be built on trust, transparency and equality before the law.
“Rules apply to everyone, without exception,” Vroutsis said.
Liolios rejects allegations over refereeing
Before the arrests, Liolios addressed questions about refereeing during a two-hour live interview with six selected media outlets, including Eurohoops.
He dismissed the allegations and suggested the criticism stemmed from people who had lost influence over refereeing.
“The issue of refereeing is being stirred up by those who want to control it,” Liolios said, arguing that some individuals were unhappy because he had ended arrangements that previously benefited them.
His comments are now being viewed against the backdrop of the ongoing investigation, although the allegations have yet to be established in court.
The coming days are expected to be crucial as investigators assess witness testimony, financial evidence and the possible involvement of those under investigation.
The case has placed Greek basketball under intense scrutiny, with its outcome potentially reshaping the leadership of the sport’s governing body and raising further questions about the integrity of competition.
