Exports of the technology-related products reached €1.4bn in August, up from €587.8m in the same month last year. However, the figure was down from €2.3bn recorded in July.
Total Irish exports fell by €184.7m, or 1.2%, to €15.9bn in August 2026 compared with August 2025, while imports of office machinery and automatic data processing equipment rose by 63.4% to €2bn.
The increase in technology-related trade comes amid continued international investment in artificial intelligence and digital infrastructure, highlighting Ireland’s role in global technology and advanced manufacturing supply chains.
However, exports of medical and pharmaceutical products declined by 6.7% year-on-year to €6bn, while organic chemical exports fell by 28.6% to €1.5bn.
Pharmaceutical products remain a major contributor to Irish exports, although the latest figures point to further moderation following the exceptionally high levels recorded during 2025.
Lorna Kelly, director of BDO Customs and International Trade Services, said the figures reinforced the importance of efficient customs procedures and reliable access to international markets.
“For businesses operating in the technology and pharmaceutical sectors, this reinforces the importance of maintaining efficient customs procedures, accurate classification and reliable access to international markets, particularly as trade restrictions and regulatory requirements continue to evolve,” she said.

Kelly also highlighted changing trade patterns within the semiconductor industry, particularly Ireland’s relationship with China.
Irish semiconductor exports to China have declined considerably in recent years, while alternative Asian markets, including Malaysia, have become increasingly important destinations.
Kelly said the shift highlighted the potential influence of international export controls, changing manufacturing arrangements and geopolitical developments on global technology supply chains.
She added that market diversification remained important as Irish exporters responded to changes in international trade policy.
Seasonally adjusted exports declined by 7.1% compared with July, while Ireland’s trade surplus narrowed to €2.6bn.
“Overall, the August figures demonstrate the importance of looking beyond headline export performance,” Kelly said, adding that continued annual growth in technology-related trade represented a more positive underlying development.
