The UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) on Thursday confirmed to Amu TV that a security incident involving one of its staff members was reported in Bamiyan on Oct. 21.
Sources have told Amu TV that a vehicle carrying a UNAMA security official had come under gunfire in the province.
UNAMA said the staff member was unharmed and that it was gathering information about the incident.
“We can confirm that a security incident involving a UN staff member was reported yesterday, and we are gathering information on this report,” UNAMA said in an email to Amu TV.
“The UN staff member was unharmed after the reported incident,” it added.
Local sources told Amu TV that the vehicle was carrying Dr. Karim Karimi, whom they identified as a security official with UNAMA in Bamiyan. They said armed assailants opened fire on the vehicle at about 6:30 p.m. on Oct. 21 in Bamiyan city.
Images obtained by Amu TV appear to show damage to the vehicle, including what appears to be a bullet impact on the windshield and a shattered side window.
UNAMA did not identify the staff member or explicitly confirm that gunfire was involved.
Local sources also told Amu TV that Karimi is a nephew of Hayatullah Khandan, a prominent Bamiyan businessman who was killed in the provincial capital three years ago.
There was no immediate information about a possible motive or whether anyone had been detained in connection with the incident.
