India’s smartphone market suffered a sharp slowdown in the third quarter of 2026, with shipments falling 26 per cent year-on-year to 35.8 million units, according to market research firm Omdia. The July to September quarter recorded the lowest third-quarter shipment volume since 2016, despite the start of the festive season. Rising smartphone prices, cautious consumer spending and weaker replacement demand affected manufacturers across price segments. The delayed timing of Diwali also pushed some festive stock-building into October, adding pressure to quarterly shipments. However, the decline was uneven across brands, with Samsung reclaiming the lead and Apple maintaining a presence among the top five.

Samsung returned to the top of India’s smartphone market for the first time since the first quarter of 2024, shipping 6.7 million units during Q3 2026. Its Galaxy A07, Galaxy A17 and Galaxy A27 helped support volumes, while the Galaxy S26 series, new Galaxy Z foldables and Galaxy S26 FE strengthened its higher-priced portfolio.

Bank cashback offers, exchange benefits and longer financing options also helped the company appeal to buyers across price segments. Its performance highlights the value of having a broad product range, supported by established retail partnerships and upgrade offers, when consumers are becoming more careful about spending.

Vivo ranked second, shipping 6.4 million units, down 34 per cent year-on-year. According to Omdia, this was the steepest decline among the five largest smartphone brands. Repeated price increases disrupted inventory planning, while limited supplies of entry-level models affected its competitiveness. 

Oppo secured third place with 4.9 million units shipped, a 24 per cent annual decline. Higher prices and cautious retailer stocking affected its A-series, although the Reno16 series helped support its push towards more expensive smartphones. Camera features and financing offers remained important parts of its strategy.

Xiaomi ranked fourth with 4.7 million units, down 28 per cent year-on-year. Rising component costs forced the company to make difficult choices around pricing, RAM and storage configurations, putting pressure on its traditional value-for-money proposition. The Redmi 15A and A7 supported volumes, while the Redmi Note 17 series and Poco X8 range contributed to its higher-priced portfolio.

Apple completed the top five with 3.9 million units shipped. Demand for the iPhone 17 and iPhone 16 models supported its performance, alongside channel stocking ahead of expected price increases. The late-quarter launch of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max also gained momentum, helped by cashback, exchange bonuses and no-cost EMI offers.

Omdia noted that Chinese smartphone brands collectively accounted for around 68 per cent of India’s market in Q3 2026, down from 75 per cent a year earlier. Samsung and Apple strengthened their positions through premium products, established sales channels and upgrade programmes.

What lies ahead for India’s smartphone market?

Omdia expects India’s smartphone market to decline by a further low-single-digit percentage in 2027, as higher prices and longer replacement cycles continue to weigh on demand. Useful artificial intelligence features could help encourage upgrades. Omdia’s research found that nearly four in ten respondents in India would consider paying more for a smartphone if it offered useful AI capabilities.

For manufacturers, the challenge will be to offer convincing reasons to upgrade while keeping prices accessible. Stronger trade-in deals, financing options and a balanced product range might prove just as important as new features in the coming quarters.
