A technical failure on the XRP Ledger (XRPL) network that slowed transaction processing has turned into an open analysis of the protocol's architecture. David Schwartz, former Chief Technology Officer of Ripple and co-creator of the system, publicly named the blockchain's vulnerable points highlighted by the incident.
The problems began after the XRP Ledger Operations team recorded an anomaly: the network's ledgers started closing significantly slower than usual. While engineers searched for the cause of the delays, questions arose in the community about the reliability of the decentralized system. Users were concerned about whether the network could fail due to the overload of several key hubs. Schwartz stepped into the discussion to explain the real limits of XRPL's resilience.

According to Schwartz's assessment, the XRP Ledger software is protected by a multi-layered security system. Nevertheless, in theory there are only two scenarios capable of completely paralyzing the entire network:
Mass infrastructure failure: a situation in which a huge number of validator servers around the world fail simultaneously. Such an outcome is possible only in the event of a global natural catastrophe, so developers consider it unlikely.
Consensus algorithm failure: an error in the very mechanism for reaching agreement between nodes, or the failure of another basic protocol function at the code level.
The recorded slowdown of rounds is direct evidence that the system's technological safety margins have decreased. Schwartz admitted that this is a marker that the network is either under a targeted attack or a hidden bug has been activated inside the code.
At the same time, the architect refuted rumors about the blockchain's vulnerability to single points of failure. The network is fully decentralized, so shutting down or overloading even a large hub (including his own node) has no effect on XRPL's overall operability and uptime.
How the creator of the network was left without logs
The main practical problem turned out to be the vulnerability of the network monitoring systems during peak loads. When consensus rounds slowed down, validators abruptly switched to maximum load. Schwartz's own node could not withstand the influx of requests, causing local RPC connections to hang in the CLOSE_WAIT state.
Because of this hang, Schwartz's internal monitoring system was unable to record and transmit diagnostic data at the most critical moment. As a result, the engineer had to reboot the server without understanding the exact cause of the failure.
During the discussion, it emerged that the hub of the XRPL co-creator was sending logs to an outdated test host of the XRP Ledger Foundation (XRPLF).

Currently, the team of engineers and community operators is manually analyzing the surviving logs to isolate and completely eliminate the defect. Schwartz summarized that, despite the temporary reduction in safety margins, the team has no reason to panic. The developers are fully in control of the situation, and the code architecture has a sufficient technological reserve to keep the network operational.
