The Bangladesh army deployment to Haiti began on Thursday 15 October 2026, when 50 soldiers left home for the Gang Suppression Force. The UN Security Council authorised that force to help Haiti’s police fight armed gangs.
For US readers, the step matters because Washington co-sponsored the force, so each new contingent bears on a US-backed mission. Gangs have spread beyond the capital, and the force remains well below its planned strength.
What the Bangladesh Army Deployment Involves
The 50 soldiers are an advance team drawn from five Bangladesh Army contingents, according to the Bangladeshi news agency UNB. Haiti’s daily Le Nouvelliste reported the same, citing the army’s own account on X.
Lieutenant General Md Mainur Rahman, the army’s Chief of General Staff, met the departing group at Army Headquarters that morning. UNB reported that he urged professionalism, discipline, vigilance and security in the mission area.
Le Nouvelliste adds that 1,600 Bangladeshi police and military personnel are expected in Haiti between mid-October and late November. The paper says that figure was announced last September, and the UNB report does not mention it.
UNB wrote that the army’s Facebook page called the deployment a further step in Bangladesh’s contribution to international peace and security. Neither report says where in Haiti the soldiers will be based.
How Dhaka Went From Pause to Departure
The Daily Star reported on 12 March that Bangladesh had told the UN it would not deploy to Haiti for now. A foreign ministry official cited the war in the Middle East, according to the paper.
The original plan covered 1,625 personnel, with 1,100 from the armed forces and 525 from the police. An unnamed police headquarters official told the paper that training for the 525 police was already complete.
A January planning letter seen by the Daily Star listed engineer, logistics, intelligence and signal companies, plus small naval boat units. The reports on the 15 October departure do not say whether that structure still applies.
Dhaka Tribune reported on 10 June that army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman said army, navy and police members would take part, so the pause had been reversed by then. The 15 October announcement names only army personnel, so the police contribution remains unclear.
The Gang Suppression Force Bangladesh Is Joining
The Security Council created the force on 30 September 2025 under Resolution 2793, replacing the Kenyan-led mission. UN News reported a vote of 12 in favour with abstentions from China, Pakistan and Russia, and a ceiling of 5,550 personnel.
On 29 September 2026 the Council extended the mandate to 31 March 2027, again with three abstentions, the Haitian Times reported. It added that a Gros-Morne attack on 28 September killed at least 11 people in what local authorities called a reprisal.
The force’s military component had 1,083 personnel on 8 July, according to Security Council Report, which drew on the UN Secretary-General’s latest report on Haiti. The Haitian Times added that the United States says more than 1,500 troops are deployed and over 4,000 are expected in the coming months.
On 29 September the Haitian Times listed Chad, El Salvador, Guatemala, Jamaica, Mongolia and Sri Lanka as contributors. Bangladesh was not among them, although Le Nouvelliste now counts it among the contributing countries.

What It Means for You
For the regional context, see Haiti in Latin America, Its Role, Weight and Alliances. It places Haiti among its Caribbean and Latin American neighbours.
Nothing in the reports changes travel conditions in Haiti. Check current US State Department and airline advice before any trip, and expect security operations to continue.
For policy watchers, a wider troop base matters for a mission Washington co-sponsored. Investors and aid groups should watch whether the force nears its 5,550 ceiling before the mandate ends on 31 March 2027.
What Is Not Known
The reports do not say where the Bangladeshi soldiers will be stationed or which operations they will join. They also do not say whether the figure of 1,600 is final or when the main body arrives.
The Daily Star named a status of personnel agreement as a February preparatory step, and its signing is not known. Neither the Haitian government nor the force command had commented in the reports reviewed.
Why Dhaka reversed its March pause is not explained in any report reviewed. The coverage of the departure also describes no incident involving the advance team.
