Purple Mountain Laboratories has launched AXP, a platform for connecting AI agents that runs on deterministic networking. The platform was unveiled on October 16 at the 10th Future Network Development Conference in Nanjing and was developed with China Mobile, Jiangsu Future Network Group and the Jiangsu Future Networks Innovation Institute. The developers describe it as the industry's first agent interconnection platform built on deterministic networking, a claim that has not been independently verified.
Deterministic networking refers to a network's ability to guarantee bounded, predictable delivery for the traffic it carries within a domain, rather than the best-effort behavior of ordinary internet links. AXP applies that idea to the growing number of software agents that need to find and call one another across organizations and regions.
According to the announcement, the platform supports registration of up to a million agents and 100,000 running at the same time. It schedules computing and network resources together, converts between the different protocols used by heterogeneous agents, detects failures and switches over within seconds, and resolves semantic addresses, meaning it locates an agent by what it does, in about a hundred milliseconds.
Running on CENI, China's national large-scale experimental facility for future networks, the team says AXP completed high-precision agent addressing across domains more than 4,000 kilometers apart and cut end-to-end task execution time by more than 20%. The announcement does not specify the baseline for that comparison.
The materials do not say which agent protocols AXP translates between. Whether it supports widely used open standards such as the Model Context Protocol (MCP) or Agent2Agent (A2A) has not been disclosed, and the meaning of the AXP acronym was not given.
Purple Mountain Laboratories says it has begun joint testing and industrial validation with telecom operators, communication equipment makers and a large steel manufacturer across multiple scenarios. No commercial availability date or pricing was announced.
