Revolut customers in Greece and several other countries were unable to log in to the app or complete card payments on Tuesday 20 October, after the digital bank was hit by a service disruption affecting multiple features.
The company confirmed the problem on X and said customers’ money and data were safe.
“Something went wrong”
Users trying to log in were shown the message “Something went wrong” and asked to try again later, CNN Greece and Powergame reported.
The problems were not limited to the app. Card payments were also declined, CNN Greece reported, causing disruption for customers trying to carry out everyday transactions.
The Independent described the outage as “particularly widespread”, noting that, unlike many banking outages, users said their cards had also stopped working, leaving them unable to pay in shops. Complaints came from users in the UK, France and Spain, the newspaper reported, adding that it was unclear whether every Revolut user was affected.
What Revolut said
In a post on X, Revolut said: “We are currently experiencing a service disruption affecting multiple services. We can confirm that all our customers’ money and data are safe. We’ve been working to fix the issue since it was identified this morning and apologise to anyone affected and for any inconvenience caused.”
Its support account posted separately: “We are currently experiencing a service disruption affecting multiple features, which may result in some services being inaccessible. Our engineering team is actively working to restore full service as quickly as possible.”
As of CNN Greece’s report at 11.18am Athens time (7.18pm AEDT), Revolut had not announced a timeframe for full restoration or explained the cause of the fault.
The Independent noted that Revolut’s online system status page said all systems were “operational” at the time of its report.
Reports beyond Greece
In Britain, more than 1,500 problem reports were logged on the Downdetector platform shortly after 8am local time, with reports also coming from other countries, CNN Greece reported.
In Ireland, where Revolut has about 3.4 million customers, RTÉ reported that the bank was experiencing a service disruption that could leave some services inaccessible.
The reports from Greek, Irish and British media reviewed by Greek City Times did not say whether customers in Australia were affected.
A difficult period for the digital bank
The outage follows two data breaches affecting Revolut customers in September, according to RTÉ.
On 14 September, the company told some customers that copies of their passports and driving licences, along with dates of birth, home addresses, email addresses and phone numbers, had been handed to criminals. Revolut said an “unauthorised third party” had used an email domain from a legitimate government agency to submit “fraudulent requests for information”. It did not say how many people were affected, though it was reported at the time that around 700 customers globally were impacted, RTÉ said.
On 24 September, some Revolut customers were also among those affected by a security incident at DriveWealth, a US broker that carries out US stock trades for Revolut customers. DriveWealth said the incident involved unauthorised access to historical personal data of some of its customers.
