Latin American markets enter the week with U.S. 10-year yields just above 5% and Brazil’s presidential runoff on 25 October ahead. Lower Treasury yields would help, but the trade is not a uniform regional bet.
The domestic focus is back-loaded: Brazil’s IPCA mid-month CPI and Mexico’s economic activity arrive Friday, after Mexico’s retail sales and inflation earlier in the week. Argentina and Colombia add secondary prints that will be read through the dollar and commodity lens.
Three Themes for the Week
High U.S. yields remain the main external constraint on Latin American carry and duration trades. The 10-year Treasury yield closed Friday just above 5%, about 15 basis points lower on the week.
Brazil’s presidential runoff on Sunday 25 October keeps the real in focus. The first round on 4 October gave Flávio Bolsonaro about 47% of valid votes and Lula about 45%, according to the TSE (Brazil’s electoral court).
Firm oil prices support exporters but also keep global inflation and rate concerns alive. Brent crude closed Friday near US$110 a barrel and WTI near US$99, according to market reports.

The session opens with China’s GDP, industrial production and retail sales, which set the tone for Latin American commodity exporters. The Brazilian central bank’s weekly Focus survey of economists then shows whether local inflation and rate expectations are shifting with election risk.

With no major Latin American releases, trading will lean on spillover from the UK labour market and Hungary’s rate decision for the global rate pulse. Positioning in the real and Mexican peso will likely dominate as investors adjust carry exposure.

The Week in Context
U.S. 10-year Treasury yields closed Friday just above 5%, down about 15 basis points on the week. That still leaves funding conditions tight for high-carry Latin American currencies.
Oil near US$110 for Brent is a mixed force. It supports exporters and fiscal revenues in Brazil and Colombia, but it also reinforces higher-for-longer global rate concerns.
Spot gold traded near US$4,166 an ounce on Friday. That points to continued demand for hedges against geopolitical, fiscal and currency risk.
What Prediction Markets Say
Brazil runoff. On Sunday 18 October at 3:59 a.m. US Eastern, Polymarket priced a Flávio Bolsonaro win at 81.0% and a Lula win at 19.5%, with about US$187 million traded on the market. Kalshi, regulated in the US by the CFTC, priced them at 79.0% and 20.0%, with about 6.6 million contracts traded.
Brazil inflation. Polymarket gave 60.9% to Brazil’s 2026 annual inflation ending between 5.00% and 5.49%, and 17.5% to a reading between 5.50% and 5.99%, with about US$168,000 traded. That market is a bet on the full-year rate, not on Friday’s mid-month reading.
Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.
The Bottom Line
Investors should treat this as a week for selective risk-taking, not a broad Latin American beta trade. Watch U.S. yields and China’s data first, then let Brazil’s Friday CPI and Mexico’s activity numbers decide whether local duration, carry or exporter equities deserve fresh capital.
