Cowboys vs Packers Spread Prediction
By Billy Ward
I’m willing to look past the Cowboys‘ terrible Week 5 game and chalk it up as one of their occasional offensive stinkers that they seemingly turn in a couple times a year in the Dak Prescott era. Being held to just 16 points by the Buccaneers was a bad sign, but it was a short week on Thursday Night Football, and largely driven by a pair of Prescott interceptions, which is at least somewhat fluky.
The Cowboys should be thoroughly motivated and well rested with 10 days between games as they travel to Lambeau Field to take on the Packers, a team with a -8 net scoring differential on the season despite their winning record.
Green Bay has a pair of three-point wins over bad teams and a blowout win over the Bears, who were missing Caleb Williams, to go with losses to the Vikings and Falcons.
I like this as a bounce-back spot for the Cowboys and a potential let down for the Packers, who are somewhat fortunate to be over .500.
I’d be fine with a moneyline play as well, but will officially take the +1.5 points at -118 on DraftKings or FanDuel.
Pick: Cowboys +1.5 (-118)
Cowboys vs Packers Moneyline Pick
There is absolutely no question about how good the Cowboys offense. They rank fifth in EPA/play and fourth in dropback EPA.
I have no concerns about Dallas being able to score in this matchup. What I am not so sure about is whether the Packers can keep pace — even against Dallas’ leaky defense.
The Packers have played split-safety coverage at the third-highest rate in the NFL — a coverage that Dak Prescott has faced 122 times this season (the most in the NFL). Prescott has thrown for 897 passing yards when facing this coverage.
If the Packers can’t deviate from their normal defensive game plan, Prescott will make them pay the price.
Pick: Cowboys Moneyline (+102 at Polymarket)
Cowboys vs Packers Over/Under Pick
The Cowboys are a dysfunctional organization right now. They recently hired Mike Pettine as a defensive advisor to simplify their complex coverages into more quarters-match looks, while Jerry Jones is publicly dictating which coaches move to the booth.
Despite the off-field noise, Dallas finally gets a true rest advantage after surviving a brutal stretch of three games in 12 days (including a trip to Brazil).
Offensively, Dak Prescott has been shredding zone coverage, which is exactly what Green Bay prefers to run.
The Packers’ offense looked incredible last week, chucking the ball downfield and executing at a high level. However, their defense remains a massive liability, and their offensive line is still highly questionable.
Green Bay doesn’t have any sort of semblance of a reliable running game, making them entirely one-dimensional on offense.
However, Jordan Love‘s deep ball is fantastic, and against a Dallas defense that is still adjusting to Pettine’s simplified schemes, there should be plenty of opportunities to hit explosive plays over the top.
High totals have consistently flown over the number this season (totals of 47+ are 18-7 to the Over).
Both of these offenses have distinct structural advantages: Dak should be able to slice up Green Bay’s soft zone, and Love will take deep shots against a Dallas secondary still finding its footing.
Look to play alternate lines on deep receiving props and expect a high-scoring shootout. I am hammering Over 52.5 points.
Pick: Over 52.5 (-112)
Christian Watson Props: Anytime Touchdown
The Packers offense filters through Christian Watson, Matthew Golden, and Tucker Kraft. Since Kraft has lacked explosiveness since his return from injury and Jordan Love is big-game hunting, we want to back the receivers tonight on Sunday Night Football.
Watson has games of 143 and 147 receiving yards, and he came close to surpassing 100 in another game when he finished with 96. He has six touchdowns in five games and has become Love’s go-to red-zone target.
Watson’s Anytime TD price (+135) hasn’t caught up to his production yet, and he has already recorded two multi-touchdown games this year.
Pick: Christian Watson Anytime Touchdown (+135)
Escalator Pick: 2+ Touchdowns (+950)
