GRAND LEDGE — Here is quick reaction from Grand Ledge football capturing the outright CAAC Blue title with its 28-14 victory over DeWitt on Friday, Oct. 16.
Players of the game
COLEMAN VANFOSSEN / ANTHONY BAKER, GRAND LEDGE: The duo played significant roles as the Comets recorded their first victory over DeWitt since a 56-49 win in 2022. VanFossen forced two turnovers, coming away with an interception and a fumble recovery and had a key reception on a scoring drive in the third quarter. The interception for VanFossen ended the opening drive of the night for DeWitt that started in Grand Ledge territory after the Comets lost a fumble on the opening kickoff. Grand Ledge capitalized on both the turnovers forced by VanFossen with touchdowns. Baker rushed for near 100 yards and had two touchdown runs. His touchdown run in the final quarter helped the Comets wrap up the league title.
Key moment
Grand Ledge had a 21-14 edge when it faced a third down and 11 from near midfield with just under 2:00 to play in the fourth quarter. Anthony Baker made sure the Comets converted it when he broke free down the sidelines for a 58-yard touchdown run with 1:54 remaining that helped seal the victory.

What it means
Grand Ledge passed its toughest test of the season to date while capturing its first league title since 2022 with the victory and pushed its record to 8-0. The Comets, who end CAAC Blue play 6-0, have an opportunity to complete the regular season undefeated for the first time since 2015 when they host Temperance Bedford next week. DeWitt (6-2, 4-1) suffered its first league loss since falling to East Lansing in Week 4 of the 2023 season. Friday's loss ended a streak of 21 consecutive league wins for DeWitt, which closes the regular season with a CAAC Blue matchup against Okemos (5-3).
Quotable
"We're great. We're not good anymore, we're (a) great (team). We can make a deep run in the playoffs and people will know who we are. They're going to know who we are even more." Grand Ledge's Coleman Van Fossen on what Friday's victory says about the Comets.
