The Greek island of Sifnos is receiving international attention after Swedish travel magazine Vagabond devoted a 10-page feature to its landscapes, culinary traditions and local culture.
Titled “Greece in Its Authentic Form,” the article was written by the magazine’s editor-in-chief and presents Sifnos as a destination that combines natural beauty, traditional settlements and warm hospitality with a more relaxed approach to tourism.
According to an announcement by the Municipality of Sifnos, Vagabond describes the island as one of Greece’s most beautiful, accessible by a short ferry trip from Athens. The magazine highlights its peaceful atmosphere, natural surroundings, food and quality leisure options, as well as the efforts of residents to preserve its distinctive character.
The feature also draws attention to the island’s many small, often family-run hotels and accommodations, which reflect its approach to tourism development.

Hiking trails and traditional villages
Nature and hiking feature prominently in the article. The journalist describes a route between Apollonia, the island’s main town, and Kamares, passing cultivated terraces, olive trees and flowering landscapes overlooking the Aegean Sea.
Sifnos has more than 100 kilometers of marked hiking trails across its mountains and along its coastline, according to the magazine, making it attractive to visitors interested in outdoor activities.
The feature also explores Kastro, a traditional settlement known for its narrow cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses and sweeping sea views. Further north, the village of Cherronisos is presented as an option for travelers seeking quieter, less crowded parts of the island.
The island’s cultural heritage is another focus, including its traditional settlements, numerous churches and religious festivals.
Pottery and local traditions
Sifnos’s pottery-making heritage also receives attention. The magazine highlights workshops that continue to operate and welcome visitors, offering a glimpse into a craft that remains part of the island’s cultural identity.
The article combines these traditions with stories from residents and business owners who have chosen to live and work permanently on Sifnos. Their experiences illustrate the close relationship between the island’s community, its natural environment and its way of life.
Sifnos cuisine takes center stage
The feature devotes particular attention to the island’s culinary traditions, presenting food as an essential part of its identity.
Among the dishes highlighted are revithada, a traditional chickpea stew slowly cooked overnight in a wood-fired oven, and mastelo, a local specialty associated with Sifnos.
The magazine also refers to Nikolaos Tselementes, the celebrated Sifnian chef whose work made a lasting contribution to Greek culinary tradition.
Local tavernas, regional products and the hospitality of residents round out the island’s food offering, reinforcing the magazine’s portrayal of Sifnos as a destination that offers more than sun and beaches.
Municipality seeks to boost international visibility
According to Greece’s Athens-Macedonian News Agency, the feature followed a scheduled press trip organized by the Municipality of Sifnos.
Giannis Rafelatos, the municipality’s deputy mayor for tourism, said coverage in prominent international publications such as Vagabond could help raise the island’s profile in overseas markets.
“Through targeted communication initiatives and partnerships with reputable travel media, we seek to highlight the island’s distinctive characteristics: its gastronomy, culture, pottery, trails, natural environment and, above all, the authentic hospitality of its people and the quality of its tourism services,” Rafelatos said.
He added that Sifnos has significant potential to attract visitors looking for a meaningful connection with the places they visit.
The municipality’s goal, he said, is to pursue international promotion in an organized way while supporting a model of tourism development that respects and preserves the island’s identity.
