Nigerian forward Ademola Lookman scored off the bench as Atletico Madrid defeated Manchester United 2-0 in their UEFA Champions League clash on Tuesday.
Lookman netted in the 79th minute to seal the victory for the Spanish side after Pablo Barrios had opened the scoring in the first minute at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano.
According to The Guardian’s match report published on Tuesday, Lookman scored after Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens saved Jonathan David’s effort but could not prevent the rebound from falling to the Nigerian forward.
The report said, “A minute later, Atlético were running through them again. Grimaldo slotted a pass into David, well inside the area, and although his shot was saved by Senne Lammens there was Lookman to score.”
Lookman’s goal came shortly after Manchester United defender Leny Yoro was sent off following a VAR review of his challenge on David.
The dismissal left United with 10 players as they sought to recover from Barrios’ early opener.
Barrios scored after Lee Kang-in passed to Alex Baena, who moved into space before laying the ball across for the midfielder to finish.
Manchester United had opportunities to equalise, with Bryan Mbeumo missing chances and captain Bruno Fernandes striking the crossbar.
Atletico also had a goal disallowed before half-time after a VAR review found a handball by Marcos Llorente in the build-up to Johnny Cardoso’s effort.
The defeat was another setback for Manchester United manager Michael Carrick, whose side had started their Champions League campaign with a 4-0 victory over Sabah FK.
For Atletico, the win marked their first victory in this season’s Champions League league phase after losing their opening match 2-1 to Liverpool.
Atletico will next face Stuttgart on October 21, while Manchester United are scheduled to meet Como on the same date.
