Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha on Monday inaugurated and laid foundation stones for 21 development projects worth more than Rs 40 crore in Unakoti district, while criticising the previous Left Front government for what he described as its failure to ensure development during its long tenure.
Addressing a gathering after the inauguration and foundation-laying ceremony, Dr Saha said the present government was taking up development works across Tripura, covering sectors such as education, healthcare, connectivity and social welfare.
He alleged that the previous government had left the state with a debt burden of Rs 13,000 crore when the BJP-led government assumed office in 2018, contrary to its claims of a “golden era”.
“If the previous government had done some work, it would have been easier for us,” he said, adding that his government was focusing on delivering development rather than making promises.
Dr Saha said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had emphasised development and public welfare, and called for efforts to improve the living conditions of women, farmers, poor people and young people.
“Development must reach every sector, from the grassroots to the state level,” he said, stressing the need to work for future generations and ensure balanced growth across Tripura.
The Chief Minister also criticised opposition parties, alleging that they had failed to acknowledge the state’s development initiatives. He claimed that the Left parties had lost the opportunity to improve people’s lives during their tenure and were now struggling to maintain their political presence.
Referring to challenges faced by the government in implementing projects, Saha said prolonged rainfall had affected construction activities this year, leaving a limited period for work. He added that he had repeatedly taken up related issues with the Centre.
The Chief Minister said the government was preparing geographic information system-based master plans for 19 cities, including Agartala. Satellite towns were also being planned in Dharmanagar, Udaipur and Agartala, he said.
Dr Saha called for collective efforts to build a developed Tripura, saying progress in education, health services and connectivity was essential to achieving the government’s vision of a “Srestha Tripura”.
Ministers Santana Chakma and Sukla Charan Noatia, MLA Bhagaban Das, Unakoti Zila Parishad sabhadhipati Amalendu Das, government secretaries Kiran Gitte and Abhishek Singh, District Magistrate Megha Jain and Superintendent of Police Raishabh attended the programme.
