The Detroit Red Wings are close to locking up one of their top scorers to a long-term deal.
Forward Alex DeBrincat is nearing a seven-year extension worth approximately $13 million per season, Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman reported on Tuesday.
The 28-year-old is in the midst of the final season of his four-year deal signed on July 9, 2023, and was set to become an unrestricted free agent next summer.
DeBrincat currently leads the Red Wings in goals (4) and points (8) this season. He also leads the franchise in goals (111) and is second in points (230) since his first year in 2023-24.
This news comes after a turbulent summer for the organization that has bled into the regular season, with former GM Steve Yzerman stepping down, Dylan Larkin having his captaincy stripped after requesting a trade, and RFA defenseman Simon Edvinsson missing games as he remains without a contract.
Before joining the Red Wings, DeBrincat was a second-round pick of the Chicago Blackhawks in the 2016 NHL Draft. He made his debut in the 2017-18 season and spent five seasons with the team before being traded to the Ottawa Senators on July 7, 2022.
The Red Wings currently sit eighth in the Atlantic Division standings with a 1-3-2 record.
