Overview
Enable Apple's call-sharing feature to receive incoming calls on both iPhones simultaneously.
Configure iMessage and SMS forwarding separately to receive messages across both devices.
Check connectivity, Apple ID settings and carrier restrictions to avoid interruptions across devices.
Carrying two iPhones is becoming increasingly common. Some people keep one for work and another for personal use, while others have an older device sitting on their desk.
The problem is that calls often come through on the phone that are out of reach. Apple lets you receive calls and messages on both iPhones, but it takes a few adjustments to set up. And despite what many users believe, Handoff is not the feature that makes it possible.
What Handoff Actually does
With Handoff, you can initiate work on one Apple device and continue the same work on another Apple device. For instance, you may initiate work on your iPhone, and then continue on another Apple device that is compatible with Handoff.
Nevertheless, Handoff will not transfer your phone number or forward calls. To turn on Handoff, visit Settings > General > AirPlay & Handoff on both iPhones. Both your iPhones should be using the same Apple ID.
How to Receive Calls on Both iPhones
Your phone number is associated with the SIM or eSIM of your main iPhone. To receive calls on the secondary iPhone, go to Settings > Phone > Calls on Other Devices on your main iPhone and activate the service by choosing the second iPhone.
This lets you take calls on either phone whenever you have an incoming call, since both will ring. You will be able to make calls on the secondary phone using your same number.
If you can't receive calls, make sure both phones are connected to Wi-Fi and signed into FaceTime with the same Apple ID.

Setting Up Messages on Both Devices
Getting messages on both iPhones requires a separate setup for iMessage and regular SMS texts.
For iMessage, open Settings > Messages > Send & Receive on the second iPhone. Check that your phone number and Apple ID email address are selected.
For standard SMS messages, including bank alerts and one-time passwords, open Settings > Messages > Text Message Forwarding on your primary iPhone. Enable the second device and enter the verification code displayed on its screen, if prompted.
Without this step, regular text messages may continue arriving only on your primary phone, even if iMessage works on both devices.
Where This Setup Falls Short
The main drawback is its reliance on your primary iPhone. Should your primary iPhone lose power supply, be turned off, or lose connection, calls and messages will not come through the second phone.
The next restriction involves your carrier. If you use Wi-Fi Calling, your carrier may impose restrictions on how you can use the service.
If you want to use two phones with the same number, contact your carrier and check if it provides a multi-device number. Another alternative for transferring your number from one phone to another is using an eSIM.

Final Thoughts
Receiving calls and messages on two iPhones is relatively straightforward once you know where to look. Handoff handles continuity between devices, Calls on Other Devices enable call sharing, and Text Message Forwarding takes care of regular SMS messages.
Setup should take about ten minutes. Once everything is enabled, test it by calling your number from another phone and sending both an iMessage and a regular SMS. If something stops working later, check the Apple ID and connection settings on both devices first.
