The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) has approved fresh appointments into its national leadership and constituted three key committees to strengthen governance, promote professional ethics, improve communication and publicity, and reinforce accountability within the association.
The appointments, approved by the National Executive Committee (NEC) following nominations by SWAN President Isaiah Benjamin, were communicated through official letters signed by the Secretary-General, Amb. Ikenna Okonkwo, on Monday, October 12, 2026. Blueprint reports
The move forms part of the association’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its institutional structures, improve administrative efficiency, promote members’ welfare and advance the collective interests of sports journalists across Nigeria.
The three committees established are the Statute Review and Ethics, Code of Conduct Committee; Media, Publicity and Marketing Committee; and Independent Investigative Committee.
The committees are expected to support the national leadership in reviewing the association’s statutory framework, strengthening professional standards, improving stakeholder engagement and ensuring that complaints and other matters referred to the association are handled in accordance with established procedures.
SWAN strengthens national leadership with fresh appointments
Among the latest appointments, Mallam Olayinka Owolewa of Kwara State has been reappointed Vice President for the North Central Zone, while Enitan Obadina of Lagos State has been assigned the responsibility of National Welfare Officer.
The approved Ex-Officio members are Sani Sulaiman, representing the North-East; Amb. Udede Jim-Opiki of the South-South; Alhaji Lurwanu Idris Malikawa Garu of the North-West; and Chukwuemeka Opara of the South-East.
The appointments, which take immediate effect, are expected to reinforce coordination between the national leadership and SWAN members across the country’s geopolitical zones.
The reappointment of Owolewa provides continuity in the association’s zonal leadership, while Obadina’s assignment places members’ welfare among the responsibilities receiving attention under the new administrative arrangements.
The Ex-Officio appointments also provide representation from different parts of the country, supporting communication between the national secretariat and the association’s wider membership.
Effective coordination, regional representation and attention to members’ welfare remain important to the operation of a professional association whose members work across different media organisations, sporting disciplines and geographical locations.
Statute review committee to strengthen governance and professional ethics
In a move aimed at improving institutional governance and professional responsibility, SWAN’s NEC has approved the constitution of the Statute Review and Ethics, Code of Conduct Committee.
Chief Alloy Chukwuemeka has been appointed chairman of the committee, with Dr Abdulgafar Oladimeji serving as vice chairman and Duku Igbahemba Joel, Esq., as secretary.
Other members are Augustine Ajayi, Enitan Obadina, Christian Eze, Alfred Saiki, Okpani Jacob Onjewu Dickson, Chimezie Anaso, Michael-Azeez Ogunsiji and Chinwendu Nnadozie.
The committee’s mandate includes reviewing SWAN’s existing statutory framework, identifying provisions that require clarification or amendment, and making recommendations to improve the association’s internal governance.
A key responsibility will be to examine the adequacy of existing rules and procedures in addressing the association’s administrative needs, with particular attention to transparency, fairness, accountability and institutional effectiveness.
The committee is also expected to develop an Ethics and Code of Conduct document to reinforce professional standards among members.
The proposed document is intended to provide clearer guidance on members’ conduct and responsibilities, while helping to protect SWAN’s reputation and promote responsible sports journalism.
Sports journalism plays a critical role in reporting competitions, scrutinising sports administration, informing the public and holding relevant stakeholders accountable. The committee’s work is therefore expected to contribute to efforts to maintain professional credibility and encourage responsible reporting among members.
Its recommendations could also provide a framework for addressing ethical questions and disputes within the association, subject to consideration and approval through the appropriate SWAN structures.
Media, publicity and marketing committee gets mandate to boost visibility
SWAN has also constituted a Media, Publicity and Marketing Committee as part of efforts to improve its communication strategy, public image and engagement with stakeholders in the sports and media industries.
The committee will be chaired by Deputy Secretary-General Samuel Ahmadu, with Cecilia Omorogbe as vice chairman and Enitan Obadina, the National Welfare Officer, serving as secretary.
Other members are Cosmos Chukwuemeka of the South-East, Michael Akpang of the South-South, Frank Idemudia Alapa of the North Central, and Usman Abbas Shehu, popularly known as Osculator, of the North-East.
The committee is expected to coordinate SWAN’s media relations, publicity activities and strategic communication initiatives, while improving the dissemination of official information about the association’s programmes and decisions.
Its responsibilities will include promoting SWAN’s activities and achievements, strengthening engagement with stakeholders and developing communication approaches capable of improving the association’s visibility across the country.
The committee is also expected to explore marketing opportunities and strategic partnerships that could support the association’s programmes, expand its reach and create additional value for members.
A coordinated communication strategy is particularly important for a professional body with national and state structures, as it can help ensure that members, sports organisations, government agencies, sponsors and other stakeholders receive timely and consistent information about its activities.
Through the committee, SWAN hopes to project its initiatives more effectively, strengthen its public profile and promote unity and professionalism across its structures.
The marketing component also offers an avenue for exploring partnerships that could support events, training programmes and other activities designed to advance the interests of sports journalists.
Independent investigative committee to reinforce accountability
In another significant development, SWAN President Isaiah Benjamin and the NEC have approved the establishment of an Independent Investigative Committee to strengthen accountability, due process and institutional integrity within the association.
Niyi Alebiosu of the South-West has been appointed chairman, while Ex-Officio member Alhaji Lurwanu Idris Malikawa Garu of the North-West will serve as vice chairman.
Aniete Patrick has been appointed secretary, with Tunde Liadi of the South-East serving as assistant secretary.
Other members are Sani Sulaiman of the North-East, Olalekan Sowande of the North Central, and Timinepre Ohia of the South-South, who is also chairman of Bayelsa SWAN.
The committee is expected to examine matters formally referred to it in accordance with SWAN’s statute and applicable procedures.
Its responsibilities include establishing relevant facts, considering and investigating complaints or issues falling within its mandate, and submitting findings and appropriate recommendations to the NEC.
The establishment of the committee is intended to strengthen confidence in the association’s internal processes by providing a structured mechanism for examining issues that require investigation.
Its work is expected to be guided by the applicable statutory provisions and procedures, ensuring that matters referred to it are considered on the basis of relevant facts and that recommendations are submitted through the appropriate channels.
The committee’s role will be particularly important in supporting transparency and accountability while ensuring that internal matters are addressed through established institutional mechanisms rather than informal or arbitrary processes.
Its findings and recommendations will provide the NEC with relevant information to consider when determining appropriate actions within its authority.
Benjamin charges appointees to advance SWAN’s objectives
SWAN President Isaiah Benjamin congratulated the newly appointed officials and committee members, expressing confidence in their ability to bring their experience, commitment and professional expertise to bear in advancing the association’s objectives.
Benjamin said additional committees would be constituted in due course, indicating that the latest appointments and committee formations form part of a continuing effort to strengthen the association’s administrative and operational structures.
The new appointments place responsibilities across leadership coordination, members’ welfare, statutory review, professional ethics, public communication and internal accountability.
The effectiveness of the arrangements will depend on the committees’ ability to discharge their respective mandates, provide practical recommendations and work with the national leadership to address issues affecting the association and its members.
For SWAN, the initiatives represent an opportunity to reinforce institutional discipline, improve communication, clarify professional expectations and strengthen mechanisms for handling internal concerns.
The association’s national leadership is expected to work with the newly appointed officials and committees to advance these objectives and support the continued development of sports journalism in Nigeria.
The appointments and committee constitutions take immediate effect.
