How Real Madrid made history with $1.42 bn in 2025-26 despite winning nothing

Real Madrid finished the 2025-26 season without a major trophy, but their finances tell a very different story. The club generated €1.221 billion ($1.42 billion) in operating revenue, becoming the first organisation in sports history to cross the €1.2 billion mark.

The record comes despite an ambitious renovation of the Santiago Bernabéu, hefty investments in star players and a trophyless campaign. So, how did Madrid manage to reach a financial milestone no other sports organisation has achieved, and what role did the revamped stadium, lucrative sponsorships and their expanding commercial business play?

Real Madrid's record revenue comes with one important footnote

Real Madrid's board approved the accounts for the 2025-26 financial year on July 28, 2026, reporting operating revenue of €1,221.3 million ($1.42 billion), an increase of 3.1% from the previous year and the club's third consecutive annual revenue record. The achievement is substantial, particularly because the club reached it without winning a major trophy during the season. Real Madrid's operating revenue excludes player transfer fees, distinguishing the figure from financial measures that include income generated by selling footballers. However, there is an accounting detail worth understanding before celebrating the milestone. The published total includes €23.5 million ($27.3 million) recognised through the reversal of a financial provision linked to a European Commission case settled the previous year. Removing that amount would bring operating revenue to approximately €1.198 billion ($1.39 billion), just below the historic threshold, although Madrid would still rank comfortably among the world's highest-earning sporting organisations

The club also reported record earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation of €287 million ($333.4 million), an 18% rise year on year.

Three principal businesses account for most of the reported revenue: marketing and commercial activities, stadium operations, and broadcasting and competitions. Together, they show how Madrid have built a financial model capable of generating enormous income even when trophies do not arrive.

The Bernabéu has become a major revenue engine, but the rebuild remains expensive

The renovated Santiago Bernabéu contributed €363 million ($421.7 million) during 2025-26, an 11% increase from the previous season and more than double the stadium income generated before redevelopment.Matchday operations, premium hospitality, stadium experiences and personal seat licences have helped expand the venue's earning potential. These licences give supporters the right to purchase season tickets over the next three decades, allowing Madrid to generate income from a long-term relationship with their customers rather than relying exclusively on individual match sales.

The redevelopment has also transformed the stadium itself through features including a retractable roof, a 360-degree video scoreboard and an underground pitch-storage system that preserves sections of the playing surface when the venue hosts other events.

These engineering projects, alongside luxury catering facilities and other finishing touches, have contributed to the renovation's cumulative cost reaching €1.407 billion ($1.63 billion) by the end of 2025-26, compared with an original plan valued at €575 million ($667.9 million) in 2018.Madrid spent a €184 million ($213.7 million) completing work during the latest financial year, including mandatory soundproofing upgrades.

Major music concerts have remained suspended since late 2024 following neighbourhood noise complaints and restrictions requiring sound levels to remain within a 55-decibel limit, forcing planned performances by artists including Aitana and Lola Índigo to move to alternative venues.

The club has also faced a setback over two proposed nearby parking facilities after Spain's Supreme Court blocked the plans, removing another potential source of long-term stadium income.

Madrid officials have played down the financial consequences, maintaining that the parking project would not materially alter the club's overall position. The stadium's financing nevertheless remains substantial, with approximately €1.1 billion ($1.28 billion) in outstanding project debt carried through three long-term, fixed-interest loans taken out in 2019, 2021 and 2023. Madrid accounts for that financing separately from its ordinary operating position, which leaves reported day-to-day net debt at approximately €9 million ($10.5 million). With an annual debt repayment of around €60 million ($69.7 million), the stadium must keep producing substantial returns, even as Madrid expect its modernised facilities to remain more profitable than the old ground.

Adidas, Emirates and HP help push commercial income higher

Marketing revenue reached €539 million ($626.1 million) in 2025-26, representing a 6% annual increase and growth of approximately 82% against the club's pre-renovation 2018-19 baseline. The sponsorship portfolio is anchored by three prominent agreements that together are estimated to generate between €290 million and €300 million ($337.1 million-$348.7 million) annually.

Adidas supplies the kit under a deal worth approximately €120 million ($139.4 million) per year, while Emirates pays an estimated €100 million ($116.2 million) annually as the principal shirt sponsor and HP contributes an estimated €70 million to €80 million ($81.5 million-$92.9 million) through its sleeve partnership.

The timing of the renewals has strengthened that commercial foundation. Emirates extended its agreement on June 9, 2026, securing the front of the shirt through 2031, while Adidas renewed its kit partnership on June 10, extending the relationship until 2034.

HP's multi-year agreement, signed on February 2, 2024, marked the first time in Madrid's 121-year history that a sponsor's logo appeared on the playing shirt's sleeve.

The remaining marketing income comes from global merchandising and licensing, estimated at €140 million to €150 million ($162.6 million-$174.3 million), and another €90 million to €110 million ($104.5 million-$127.8 million) from regional and secondary partners.Official shirts, training equipment, the Bernabéu megastore, online sales and more than 30 corporate partners help Madrid make money from their global popularity beyond the weekly television audience. That commercial reach has become increasingly important as the club looks to maximise the value of its brand independently of results on the pitch.

Madrid are spending heavily on the squad without losing sight of sustainability

The revenue record has not stopped Madrid from investing in the team and its infrastructure. The club allocated €161 million ($187.1 million) directly to new player signings during 2025-26, while overall sports staff expenses, including wages and the annual accounting cost of transfer fees, increased from €540 million ($627.2 million) in 2018-19 to €618 million ($717.8 million)Despite that increase, player wages and transfer amortisation represented approximately 46% of total revenue, remaining below the 50% threshold the club identifies as a useful benchmark for financial discipline.

Madrid also invested €192 million ($222.9 million) in facilities, technology and infrastructure during the financial year, reinforcing the spending commitment beyond the senior squad. As a member-owned club, Madrid does not operate like a privately held team whose external billionaire owners can withdraw dividends from the business. Its financial model instead directs available surpluses back towards football operations, stadium development and other club projects, although the cost of maintaining both the squad and the Bernabéu means that strong revenue must be sustained.

The Real Madrid Foundation extends the club's reach beyond football

Not all of Madrid's broader activity is designed to generate commercial returns, with the Real Madrid Foundation operating social and educational programmes through football and basketball across the world. The foundation, which marks 28 years of operations in 2025, runs more than 425 social sports schools across 102 countries and reports a global reach approaching two million people. Its programmes include more than 30,000 vulnerable young people, with over 14,000 beneficiaries across the Americas, while the 2025-26 season recorded its highest participation in national programmes for people with disabilities, including sensory schools and wheelchair-adapted basketball clinics.

The foundation works through a mix of corporate partnerships, fundraising events, coaching programmes, in-kind donations and financial support from the club. Its annual funding is estimated at €18 million to €22 million ($20.9 million-$25.5 million), with approximately €15 million to €16 million ($17.4 million-$18.6 million) spent on ongoing social projects during 2025-26.Partners including Endesa, HSBC, UPS, GSK, Corpay and El Corte Inglés support specific programmes, while the annual Corazón Classic Match brings legends back to the Bernabéu to raise money through tickets, broadcasting and merchandise.

The foundation also uses coaching clinics and educational congresses to generate income for projects that subsidise free sports schools in less affluent regions.During the latest season, programmes supported more than 1,515 children across the Middle East and over 3,200 across Asia-Pacific, including India, while adapted sports projects in Spain reached more than 700 beneficiaries. Partnerships with HP and Abbott also supported digital literacy, gender inclusion, health monitoring and nutrition initiatives, particularly in India and Indonesia.

The foundation's emergency work included a €1 million ($1.16 million) club donation for earthquake relief in Venezuela in June 2026, matched by a further €1 million from president Florentino Pérez personally, bringing the reported contribution to €2 million ($2.32 million). In September, the club also formalised a partnership with the Community of Madrid's Ministry of Health to support people affected by rare diseases, particularly epidermolysis bullosa, commonly known as Butterfly Skin.

Madrid's financial success extends beyond the headline revenue number, supporting a major sporting operation, an increasingly commercial stadium and a substantial social programme. The club has crossed a historic threshold, but sustaining that position will require its commercial growth to keep pace with the costs of its squad, its ambitious home and its wider commitments.
