Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Greater Jakarta Police have intensified their Green Policing program as part of Quick Wins 1, “Safe Public Spaces,” under the National Police Chief's 100-Day Priority Program, “Police with the Community.”
Greater Jakarta Police Chief Commissioner General Dadang Hartanto said the program would begin within the police force before being expanded to the wider public.
“I want to emphasize that Green Policing must start from the internal environment first. After its implementation runs well, only then will we invite the public to carry out similar activities,” Hartanto said on Friday.
He also ordered a cleanliness competition among work units, covering police headquarters grounds, offices, and toilets.
“Cleaning areas are divided so that every work unit is responsible for keeping its environment clean and free from waste buildup,” he added.
Hartanto stressed that waste management was a key focus, particularly the sorting of plastic, organic, and hazardous and toxic waste according to their respective characteristics.
He also called for the installation and use of biopore infiltration holes to manage organic waste in accordance with technical requirements, as well as greater discipline among personnel in disposing of waste and cigarette butts properly.
“Special smoking areas need to be provided to reduce others' exposure to smoke,” he said.
The Green Policing initiative also included community service to clean up the environment and the planting of 25 trees at the Greater Jakarta Police headquarters as part of its greening efforts. Hartanto also highlighted waste and flooding as major environmental challenges facing Jakarta.
“After internal improvements are underway, the program will be developed together with regional governments, related agencies, and the public to support waste management, greening, and flood risk reduction,” he said.
Similarly, Greater Jakarta Police Public Relations Head Senior Commissioner Budi Hermanto said environmental protection was part of the police's duty to protect, shelter, and serve the public.
“Through Green Policing, we want to be present with the public, safeguard the environment, and create more comfortable spaces. This is part of the spirit of Police with the Community,” Hermanto said.
