KUALA LUMPUR: Gentari Sdn Bhd (Gentari), a clean energy solutions company wholly-owned by Petroliam Nasional Bhd (Petronas), and BYD Malaysia Sdn Bhd, the Malaysian arm of global electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer BYD, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to support the development and deployment of high-power EV charging infrastructure in Malaysia.
The strategic collaboration will explore opportunities to deploy BYD Flash Charging technology in Malaysia, alongside battery energy storage systems (BESS), to make charging faster and more convenient for EV users.
BYD Flash Charging can deliver approximately 400 kilometres of driving range in as little as 5 minutes for compatible vehicles under optimal conditions.
The partnership comes as Malaysia’s EV market continues to expand rapidly, with 53,537 new EV registrations recorded in the first nine months of 2026, a 98.8% increase from the same period last year.
This growth reflects the continued momentum of EV adoption in the country, supporting Malaysia’s broader ambition to accelerate vehicle electrification, including the government’s target of 30,000 public EV charging points nationwide by 2030.
To support this growth, Gentari currently operates more than 600 EV charging points in Malaysia and provides access to about 18,000 charging points across Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and India through its Gentari Go Roaming Hub.
Gentari group CEO Sushil Purohit said Malaysia’s EV market is growing, but the next phase of adoption will depend on
the quality, convenience and reliability of the charging experience.
“Speed is one part of that equation. Drivers also need chargers in the right places, backed by reliable power and dependable operations.
“BYD’s leadership in EV, battery and high-power charging technology, combined with Gentari’s experience in developing and operating EV charging networks, gives us a strong foundation to strengthen Malaysia’s EV charging ecosystem and support wider
adoption,” he added.
Under the MoU, the parties will work together to identify suitable charging locations for BYD Flash Charging infrastructure, including key intercity corridors connecting major population centres.
They will also assess supporting power
infrastructure, battery energy storage requirements, technical and commercial considerations, project development opportunities, and potential operating models to enable future deployment at scale.
In addition to green mobility, the parties will also explore opportunities in renewable energy generation and energy storage, drawing on Gentari’s clean energy expertise and BYD’s capabilities in energy storage and technology innovation.
BYD vice president and general manager of BYD Asia Pacific Auto Sales Division Liu Xueliang said the brand has been investing in advanced charging technology to address one of the key considerations for EV users, which is charging time.
“We are now taking this technology beyond our home market and expanding its reach to more international markets.
“Malaysia is an important market for BYD, and we are pleased to bring BYD Flash Charging here as part of our continued efforts to support the country’s growing EV adoption.
“Through our collaboration with Gentari, we look forward to exploring how this technology can contribute to a faster, more convenient and more connected charging experience for Malaysian EV users,” he said.
He said as an EV leader, BYD believes its responsibility goes beyond delivering great vehicles.
BYD Malaysia managing director Jacob Ma said the brand wants to give customers the confidence to switch to electric and enjoy a truly seamless EV ownership experience.
“This is an important step for BYD in Malaysia, and we are proud to be part of the journey to build a stronger and more complete EV ecosystem for Malaysians,” he said.
The MoU was signed by Sushil and Ma. The signing was witnessed by representatives from both organisations, including Petronas senior vice president, corporate strategy Marina Md Taib, senior vice president, projects, engineering and technology, Dato’ Ir Ts Mohd Yusri Mohamed Yusof, Gentari chief green mobility officer Fadzrul Ahmad, head of green mobility Malaysia Haikal Zubir, board member Girish Nadkarni, alongside BYD Company chairman and president Wang Chuanfu and Liu.
