Two organisations, the Axom Chatro Yuva Sanmilan and the All Assam Scheduled Caste Students' Union (AASCSU), have announced a long march from Sivasagar to Guwahati to demand compensation and rehabilitation support for flood-affected families and businesses in Sivasagar, Jorhat and Charaideo districts.
Through the march, the organisations plan to submit a memorandum to the Assam Chief Minister at Janata Bhawan, seeking compensation of Rs 10 lakh each for flood-hit families and business establishments in the three districts.
The organisations have also urged the Central Government to provide special funds for rebuilding infrastructure damaged by floods in the affected areas.
Apart from flood relief and rehabilitation, the march will highlight concerns over alleged illegal coal, stone and sand mining in Upper Assam. The organisations will demand an end to such activities, citing their impact on the region.
The proposed march aims to draw the attention of both the state and central governments to the demands of flood-affected people and the need to address other pressing issues in Upper Assam.
