On Sunday night, an Austrian Airlines Airbus A320-200 flying from Tel Aviv Ben Gurion Airport (TLV) to Vienna International Airport (VIE) was forced to divert to Vasil Levski Sofia Airport (SOF) in Bulgaria due to an alleged bomb threat. The seriousness of the situation prompted the Bulgarian Air Force to dispatch MiG-29 'Fulcrum' fighter jets to escort the airliner to Sofia Airport.
Once on the ground in Bulgaria, the relevant authorities carried out a search of the aircraft, as well as its passengers and crew. The flight was able to continue to Vienna as planned, albeit with a lengthy delay, due to no bomb being found. In any case, with the recent attempted hijacking of an Israel-bound flydubai 737 by its own pilot still fresh in the public conscience, authorities can't be too careful.
A Dramatic Diversion
Austrian Airlines flight OS82 is a regularly scheduled service from Tel Aviv to Vienna. According to Flightradar24, it currently operates twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays, with October 18's iteration having been flown by a 13-year-old Airbus A320-200 that bears the registration OE-LZE. That flight took off slightly late, hitting the skies at 7:04 PM as opposed to the planned 6:40 PM, but it soon got later.
According to NBC, the flight was cruising towards Vienna near the Romanian border when its crew received an anonymous bomb threat concerning, as Ynet put it, a suspicious object on the plane. This prompted the crew to divert to nearby Sofia in neighboring Bulgaria, with the country's military dispatching MiG-29s to escort the jet. After landing, a search took place, with Austrian Airlines saying:
"During the search of the affected aircraft, the passengers, and the crew, no danger was identified."
The Flight Eventually Reached Vienna In The Early Hours Of Monday Morning
The flight was relatively lightly loaded, with just 51 passengers and six crew members reported to have been on board. It touched down in Sofia at 9:42 PM local time on Sunday. It remained on the ground there for more than five hours while the necessary searches and security checks were carried out, before eventually taking to the skies again at 2:54 AM local time in the early hours of Monday.
Its onward journey to Vienna took just over an hour, with its eventual touchdown in the capital city of Austria taking place at 3:12 AM local time. Compared to its scheduled arrival time of 9:25 PM on Sunday night, this represented a delay of almost six hours. However, given the potentially serious nature of the bomb threat that was made against the aircraft, the delay was a necessary way of ensuring peace of mind.
As previously noted, OE-LZE was the Airbus A320-200 that was operating Austrian Airlines flight OS82 on Sunday night when it had to divert to Sofia due to a bomb threat. According to ch-aviation, this 13-year-old narrowbody twinjet is one of 29 units of the A320-200 in the Austrian Airlines fleet, which also features seven newer A320neos. It re-entered service on Monday morning with a flight to Geneva (GVA).
Austrian Airlines Has Generally Retained A Strong Presence In Tel Aviv In Recent Times
In recent years, airlines' flight schedules to and from Israel have been somewhat subject to change amid the ebb and flow of geopolitical tensions in the region. In the last 12 months, Austrian Airlines has managed to maintain a relatively consistent link from its main hub in Vienna to Tel Aviv, generally offering two or three round trips a day. However, in April and May of 2026, it did pause the route.
According to scheduling data from Cirium, an aviation analytics company, other temporary pauses were put in place from November to December in 2023, October 2024 to January 2025, and June 2025 to July 2025. In any case, given that there were only 51 flyers on Sunday's OS82 iteration, its current twice to thrice-daily frequency seems somewhat high. It will be interesting to see if and how it alters.
