Tura, Oct 12: The Meghalaya Power Distribution Corporation Limited (MePDCL) organised an electricity awareness programme at Embee Rosebud Secondary School in Tura, West Garo Hills, on Monday, educating around 100 students about power theft, illegal connections, meter tampering and electrical safety. The programme was conducted by Rocky A. Sangma, Assistant Executive Engineer of the Investigation and Enforcement (I&E) Division, Tura East Distribution Sub-Division, MePDCL. The school principal and many other teachers also attended.
Using interactive questions and everyday examples, Sangma compared stealing money without permission to illegally taking electricity, explaining how power theft affects consumers and the wider community.
He highlighted the risks of illegal hooking from overhead power lines, including overloading, voltage fluctuations, power interruptions, electrical accidents and damage to infrastructure. He urged consumers to use authorised connections and ensure electrical work is handled by qualified personnel.
The session also covered meter tampering and unauthorised use of domestic connections for commercial purposes. Sangma explained the importance of consumer IDs, connection categories and sanctioned loads in electricity documents.
He discussed Sections 126 and 135 of the Electricity Act, 2003, which deal with the assessment of unauthorised electricity use and electricity theft, respectively. Students were informed about the potential legal and financial consequences of violations and their impact on the power distribution system.
Visual slides, practical examples and interactive questions helped students follow the session. Sangma encouraged students, particularly those in higher classes, to take the lessons seriously and spread awareness among their families and communities.
The programme emphasised authorised connections, compliance with electricity regulations and the shared responsibility of protecting power infrastructure. MePDCL highlighted that electricity theft can endanger lives, disrupt supply and affect other consumers. In many other prominent schools in Meghalaya, similar programmes are being conducted by the department.
