Former Lithuanian kickboxing champion Vincas Jašmontas was shot dead in Vilnius last Friday, and a former police officer has been named as a suspect in the killing, news portal Delfi reported Monday.
Jašmontas, who previously used the surname Danisevičius, won a silver medal at the European Kickboxing Championships in 2016 and became Lithuanian kickboxing champion in 2017.
The suspect is Roland Novickas, a former head of the second division of the Vilnius County Police Organised Crime Investigation Board. He left the police force about 15 years ago, Delfi reported.
Novickas, born in 1973, was detained at the scene on Savanorių Avenue after the shooting. He did not attempt to flee and waited for police to arrive. Officers seized a firearm that he legally owned.
The suspect was later released from detention and placed under precautionary measures, including the seizure of his travel documents and a written commitment not to leave the country.
Police initially received a report of an assault from a caller who said he was being attacked by armed men. When officers arrived, they found a man who had been shot multiple times near a bus stop.
Preliminary information indicates that the shooting occurred during a conflict. A pretrial investigation into the killing is underway.
