Assam swimmer Jahnabi Kashyap won two gold medals and rewrote the national record books twice on the opening day of the 1st Senior National Short Course Swimming Championship 2026, which began at the Veer Savarkar Sports Complex in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on Sunday.
In the 200 m freestyle, Kashyap touched the wall in 2:03.12 to claim the gold medal and, in the process, set a new national record. She then returned to the pool for the 100 m butterfly and clinched gold once again, stopping the clock at 1:02.15, a time that also stands as a new national record, completing a golden double on the very first day of the championship.
The first edition of the senior national meet in the short course format is being held over four days, from October 25 to October 28, with the remaining days of competition still to come.
Assam Swimming Association secretary Bhaskar Das congratulated Kashyap on her performance, which gave the state a notable early start at the national meet. The achievement is all the more significant as both of her wins on the day came with new national marks, underlining the quality of her swimming across two different strokes and distances.
