SHILLONG, OCT 18: BJP legislator from Ranikor Pius Marwein has said the decision of eight former UDP MLAs to merge with the BJP came after assurance from Union Home Minister Amit Shah on five long-pending demands of Meghalaya.
Expressing thanks to Assembly Speaker Thomas A Sangma for recognizing the merger under the Tenth Schedule, Marwein said, “The joining of 8 MLAs with the world’s largest party was not an easy task.
“The veteran leader, who has been elected twice as MLA and MDC in his 20 years in politics, said fulfilling promises becomes difficult when critical issues are governed by central legislation and one is not part of the national ruling party.
He listed their key demands as MRSSA, inclusion of Khasi and Garo in the Eighth Schedule, coal mining, relocation of the Harijan Colony and minority status for Seng Khasi and Sein Raij.
“We trust promise given by such a tall leader of the country and finally we decided to join the BJP under the able leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi ji,” Marwein said, referring to the assurance given by Amit Shah after multiple rounds of talks in Delhi.
Marwein said the group was surprised at how easily they could meet central leaders, unlike during the Congress era when “leaders from our state had to wait for years to meet one Union Minister.”
He thanked BJP Northeast coordinator and MP Sambit Patra for patiently hearing their demands and taking them up with the ministries concerned.
The eight MLAs will soon visit Delhi to meet Amit Shah and other Union Ministers to initiate developmental projects, with top priority on rural outreach and awareness of central schemes, Marwein said, adding they will work cohesively with Chief Minister Conrad Sangma and NDA partners in the state.
