The Philadelphia Eagles need a response. That's about as plain as it gets. Three consecutive losses have turned what once looked like a manageable stretch into a test of will and heart.
Now, the conversation has shifted. The questions being asked aren't common in the Nick Sirianni coaching era. How does this team steady its ship? How does it regain control of its season? Sunday's matchup with the Carolina Panthers offers an opportunity to stop the slide, but Philadelphia will have to navigate several challenges to take advantage of it.
The Eagles have struggled to protect their quarterback, and last week's trip to London added another layer of concern. The Panthers have vulnerabilities of their own, particularly along the offensive line, but a potential return by a key starter could change that equation. With both teams looking to establish some consistency, several factors could determine how this game unfolds. Here are a few other storylines that may help answer questions in an important Week 6 tussle in the NFC.
Carolina's pass protection is worse than the sack numbers suggest
Bryce Young has taken ten sacks this season, but that number doesn't fully capture the pressure that Carolina's offensive line has allowed. They have surrendered a 42.7% pressure rate. That was the fifth-highest mark in the NFL through the first five weeks. However, Carolina has only played four games.
Taylor Moton's potential return could change Carolina's outlook
One of Carolina's biggest injury storylines involves right tackle Taylor Moton. He has missed the entire season so far while dealing with blood clots. Moton fully participated in practices this week and is listed as questionable, leaving his return to action possible.
His availability would matter beyond the emotional lift of getting a key player back. Moton could strengthen a Panthers offensive line that has struggled to keep pressure away from Young. Philadelphia's pass rush would face a different challenge if Carolina can restore stability at right tackle. That makes Moton's status one of the most consequential developments to monitor before kickoff. He can help improve Carolina's running game and pass protection.
The Eagles could find opportunities against Akayleb Evans
Philadelphia needs to move the ball through the air, and Akayleb Evans could be a favorable matchup. According to Pro Football Focus, Evans has allowed 11 receptions for 197 yards and a touchdown on 14 targets, with opposing quarterbacks recording a 142.6 passer rating when targeting him.
Those numbers suggest the Eagles may have opportunities to attack his coverage. Philadelphia must still be selective with its throws, but avoiding unnecessary risks doesn't mean passing up favorable matchups. Finding ways to exploit Evans could help the Eagles generate air production while easing pressure on the rest of the offense.
An unfavorable scheduling trend adds another challenge
Philadelphia played in London last Sunday before returning to face Carolina, which is coming off a bye. History offers little encouragement for teams facing that particular disadvantage: Teams returning from international games to face opponents coming off a bye are 0-4 in the four documented instances since 2011.
The Buffalo Bills lost to the New York Jets in 2011 after playing in Toronto. The Houston Texans fell to the San Diego Chargers in 2016 after an international game in Mexico City, while the Miami Dolphins lost to the Atlanta Falcons in 2021 after traveling back from London. Last season, the Cleveland Browns lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers following their trip to London.
Across those four games, the international-travel teams averaged just 15.25 points. The sample is small and won't determine what happens Sunday, but it highlights the challenge Philadelphia faces. The Eagles must overcome the demands of travel while preparing for an opponent with extra rest.
A loss would put Nick Sirianni's team in familiar territory
Another Eagles defeat would drop Philadelphia to 2-4. That would match their worst start under Nick Sirianni. He was also 2-4 after six games of his first season in 2021. He handed the play calling to Shane Steichen. A heavy running game was born. The team eventually recovered, finishing 9-8 and reaching the playoffs.
That history reminds us that a difficult start doesn't have to define an entire season. However, the circumstances are different now, and Philadelphia needs to show it can respond to adversity rather than let its early struggles continue. A win over Carolina wouldn't solve every problem, but it would provide much-needed stability. Another loss would deepen the urgency surrounding a season that has already taken several unexpected turns.
