Olivier Giroud’s (40) farewell tour stopped by the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday night, a stadium where he spent some of the best years of his career, including scoring what he has since nominated as his best ever goal.
Now in what he openly talks about being his final season in professional football, Giroud was left on the bench for Lille OSC’s trip to face Arsenal in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night. The former France international was brought on by Davide Ancelotti, but only after his side has conceded three goals against the Gunners.
Arsenal would see out the 3-0 win in what was a disappointing night for Les Dogues. It was more bittersweet for Giroud, who was applauded by the home crowd when he came off the bench, and as he revealed to Canal Plus, he finished the night inside the Arsenal dressing room. “Mikel (Arteta) told me to come to the dressing room so that we can make the most of it together. It was brilliant, an incredible feeling. There are special feelings after five (six) years here. They (the fans) don’t forget. That’s what’s great about the English,” he told the broadcaster.
