The Vancouver Canucks have a new official ice cream, as they officially released Pacific Puck this week.
But is it any good?
Conceptually, Pacific Puck is inspired.
The flavour is distinctly local to British Columbia, inspired by Nanaimo Bars, a no-bake dessert named after the Vancouver Island city. Nanaimo Bars are one of the most famous Canadian desserts, and turning it into an ice cream in connection with the Canucks is a legitimately brilliant idea.
Making it an ice cream sandwich in the shape of a hockey puck takes it to the next level.
This Season, there’s a brand-new flavour in the Canucks’ locker room.
Ice cold? Check. Satisfying? Oh yes. Unmistakably BC? You better believe it. Max Sasson and Luke Schenn brought in the experts to make sure it’s ready for action. #Canucks | @WesternFamilyCA @saveonfoods pic.twitter.com/Fe7WwtMIRo

I decided to take Pacific Puck for a test drive, so I picked up a box of four from Save-On-Foods. Normally $7.99, I got it on sale for $6.99 — more expensive than a basic Chapman’s vanilla ice cream sandwich, but quite a bit cheaper than the more premium ice cream sandwiches on the shelves.
Visually, the Pacific Puck sandwiches looked essentially the same as they did on the box. There were no broken cookies or smushed ice cream.

Perhaps it shouldn’t have been surprising, but I was caught off-guard by how much it legitimately tastes like a Nanaimo Bar. They nailed the flavour.
The one issue I have with Nanaimo Bars is that they can sometimes be far too sweet. Somehow, Pacific Puck threads the needle and avoids that fate, perhaps because the chocolate isn’t a ganache like in a real Nanaimo Bar but is instead in the “chocolatey cookie.”
It was honestly delicious, though the texture of the ice cream was a little bit unexpected: the “graham pieces” and bits of coconut in the ice cream meant the ice cream wasn’t entirely smooth, like the custard normally is in a Nanaimo Bar.
That’s not necessarily a bad thing, but something to note for those for whom texture is a big thing.
I tasted the Pacific Puck alongside what is ostensibly the target market: three school-aged children. All three gave it a positive review.
“At first it tastes like a normal ice cream sandwich,” said 13-year-old Jimmy, when asked for comment. “But then it turns into this chocolate cakey flavour after the coldness dies down and it warms up a bit.”
One out of three Wagner children even said it was the best ice cream sandwich he had ever eaten, and would prefer it over any other flavour of ice cream sandwich.
