Toprak Razgatlioglu’s rookie MotoGP season is over. Pramac Yamaha confirmed on 20 October that the three-time WorldSBK champion will have surgery on his injured shoulder and miss the final five rounds of 2026, starting with this weekend’s Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island. The Toprak Razgatlioglu injury dates back to the Indonesian Grand Prix at Mandalika, and it turned out to be worse than anyone believed when he climbed back on the bike that weekend.
Toprak Razgatlioglu injury: what is confirmed
These points come from the rider’s and team’s statements, as reported by Crash.net and Motorsport Week:
- The crash: Razgatlioglu highsided in second practice at Mandalika (Turn 13, per Motorsport Week) and dislocated his shoulder. Medics put it back in place at the track.
- The weekend that followed: he qualified 19th, finished the Sprint 19th, then retired from the Grand Prix after about eight laps, citing a lack of strength in the shoulder.
- The diagnosis: checks in Milan after he returned from Indonesia showed the damage was more extensive than doctors first thought.
- The surgery: scheduled for Monday, 26 October, in Milan, followed by rehabilitation. The team has given no return date.
- Races missed: all five that remain. That is Australia (23–25 Oct), Malaysia (30 Oct–1 Nov), Qatar (6–8 Nov), Portugal (20–22 Nov) and Valencia (27–29 Nov).
- The replacement: Yamaha test rider Augusto Fernandez takes the No. 7 bike from Phillip Island onward. Motorsport Week notes it will be his fifth outing of the year; his last was the British Grand Prix, where he finished 15th.
Razgatlioglu called it a difficult but necessary decision, one he made after talking with his doctors and the people closest to him. He said he was particularly sorry to miss Phillip Island, a track where he had some of his best Superbike days, and wished teammate Jack Miller well for his home race. Pramac team director Gino Borsoi said the team would back him through his recovery.
Where the Toprak Razgatlioglu injury leaves his rookie season
Razgatlioglu ends 2026 on 18 points, 21st in the championship, without a top-ten finish. His best result was 11th in Hungary, and Indonesia was his third retirement after Assen and Aragon. For a rider who arrived with three Superbike titles and a reputation for late-braking moves nobody else would try, the numbers are modest. They were always likely to be on a satellite Yamaha in a field that Ducati has controlled for years.
The Australian round also carries extra weight this year. It is MotoGP’s last scheduled visit to Phillip Island before the Australian Grand Prix moves to Adelaide, and it is Jack Miller’s final home MotoGP race before he joins Yamaha’s WorldSBK effort in 2027. Razgatlioglu, who won Superbike races on the island, will now watch both from the sidelines. Our weekend schedule for 19 October has the session times in U.S. Eastern.
Analysis: what the Toprak Razgatlioglu injury changes
The section below is Backfire Racing’s reading of the news, not part of the team’s announcement.
For Razgatlioglu: lost laps, but on a bike that is about to retire
A rookie needs mileage, and five races is roughly a quarter of a season’s worth of track time gone. That hurts. But the timing is softer than it looks. MotoGP’s 2027 rules bring 850cc engines, less aerodynamics, no ride-height devices and a switch from Michelin to Pirelli tyres. Much of what Razgatlioglu would have learned in the final five rounds, especially about managing Michelin tyres, would not have carried over anyway.
The laps that matter for him are the first ones on 2027 machinery. If he is still in rehabilitation when the teams start testing next year’s bikes after Valencia, that is where the injury would cost him most. His deal with Yamaha runs through the end of 2027, so next season is the one that will decide how his MotoGP move is judged. Pramac has not said whether he will be fit for any post-season running.
For Pramac Yamaha: a known quantity in the seat
In championship terms, the damage is limited. Razgatlioglu was not scoring heavily, and Fernandez is a former full-time MotoGP rider who knows the Yamaha well from testing. A run of 13th-to-16th-place finishes from Fernandez would be roughly what the No. 7 bike has been producing. What Yamaha does lose is a second set of race-weekend data from a rider still learning the bike. Feedback of that kind would have been useful to the factory heading into a new rules cycle.
There is also a line-up question in the background. Miller leaves at the end of the year, and Moto2’s Izan Guevara, whose Motegi win reshaped the Moto2 title fight, lines up with Pramac Yamaha for 2027. A garage pairing a Superbike convert with a Moto2 graduate would benefit from Razgatlioglu being fit and up to speed when testing starts.
For the Superbike-to-MotoGP debate
Razgatlioglu’s move was the highest-profile jump from WorldSBK to MotoGP in years. With his season ending on 18 points, critics of that path will have plenty to point at. A fairer judgement would wait for a full season on equal 2027 rules. Traffic is also running the other way: Franco Morbidelli is heading to Ducati’s WorldSBK team and Brad Binder to BMW, so riders are about to test the gap between the two championships from both directions.
What is still unknown about the Toprak Razgatlioglu injury
Three questions remain open.
- Exactly what damage the shoulder has sustained. The statements describe the injury only as worse than anyone first believed.
- How long rehabilitation will take, and whether he will ride at any post-season test.
- Whether Fernandez stays in the seat for all five rounds, or only “until Razgatlioglu is ready”, as Motorsport Week put it.
What to watch next
Fernandez’s first laps at Phillip Island this weekend come first. Razgatlioglu’s surgery in Milan follows on Monday, 26 October, and Pramac’s update after it should give the first realistic recovery timeline for the Toprak Razgatlioglu injury. After that the series heads to Sepang, scene of some of MotoGP’s most famous title deciders, including Valentino Rossi’s 2003 crown.
