When the Pittsburgh Steelers traded up to select Alabama wide receiver Germie Bernard 47th overall in the second round of the 2026 NFL Draft, the image of the Steelers on the phone with USC wide receiver Makai Lemon before the Philadelphia Eagles jumped the Steelers to select the receiver just the night before was still fresh on everyone’s minds. Fast forward to Week 7, and Bernard has captured the attention of the NFL world.
Pittsburgh made it a point to add to their receiver room this past offseason, as they traded for Michael Pittman Jr. from the Indianapolis Colts back in March. Despite the high draft capital investment the team made in him, Bernard found himself buried as the WR4 on the Steelers depth chart to start the season. After injuries to both Pittman and Roman Wilson, though, Bernard has had to step up in their absence and has exceeded all expectations.
Bernard is second among all rookies in catches through six weeks with 24. He is just five receptions behind number four overall pick Carnell Tate for the most among all rookies. What sticks out the most is the fact that Bernard has 17 of his 24 catches over the last two weeks. With Pittman and Wilson both on injured reserve for an undetermined amount of time, Bernard is already making the most of his role.
Quarterback Aaron Rodgers praised the rookie for his confidence that has clearly grown over the past several weeks after his breakout 11 reception 87 yard performance against Tampa Bay in which the rookie receiver scored the game-winning touchdown in overtime.
“There comes a time when the confidence starts to match the potential, and I think we’re reaching that time with Germie,” Rodgers said. “Very proud of him.”

For someone who has the reputation of not trusting his rookie receivers enough, Rodgers has certainly shown a good bit of confidence in Bernard over the last few weeks as he continues to pepper him with targets.
Not only does Rodgers seem to be trusting Bernard more and more, but the passing volume of the Steelers offense also bodes well for Bernard’s role the rest of the season. Rodgers’ 233 passing attempts through six weeks is the fifth most by any quarterback in the league. The veteran quarterback’s ADOT currently ranks 22nd in the league with a 7.3 mark. Bernard excelled in those short and intermediate areas of the field and after the catch in college. His play style translated seamlessly int the Steelers offense, coupled with the sheer amount of opportunities he could see, should have all Steelers fans excited.
So much to get excited about with Germie Bernard's game.

Dude is already a smooth and savvy football player who knows how to set up his defenders at the top of his routes. #Steelerspic.twitter.com/WdgKOClcbZ
We have only seen Bernard in this expanded role for a few weeks, but it’s hard to see this as a flash in the pan instead of a real rookie breakout. In a year in which nobody is running away with the Offensive Rookie of the Year award, Bernard could very well put his name in the running in the coming weeks.
Bernard’s breakout makes it that much more unlikely that the Steelers trade for a big-name receiver at the deadline, even with all of the injuries to their receiver room. It would be silly for them to consider trading for someone who would take snaps away from the rookie that they have invested serious capital into and that their quarterback continues to trust.
“The Infection” is here to stay as one of the most important and dynamic pieces on the Steelers offense. Even when Pittman and Wilson eventually return from injury, it would be shocking to see Bernard go back to being the fourth receiver in the offense, especially if he keeps playing this way.
