The Boston Celtics and Philadelphia 76ers swapped star forwards in a blockbuster trade, sending Jaylen Brown to Philadelphia and Paul George to Boston alongside a package of draft picks.
The deal gives both teams a new look heading into the 2026-27 NBA season. Sporting News' small forward rankings offer an early comparison of the two players, with Brown coming in at No. 3 and George ranking No. 12 among the league's starters at the position.
Brown was Boston's primary offensive engine last season, creating opportunities for himself and his teammates. He should still have opportunities to handle the ball in Philadelphia, where his midrange scoring and 3-point shooting will give the Sixers another option on offense.
However, Brown's defense will be an important factor in his new role. Sporting News highlighted his need to improve his off-ball awareness, noting that Philadelphia will need him to deliver his best defensive season yet.
George brings a different skill set to Boston. Sporting News identified him as a strong fit for the Celtics because of his ability to create his own shot while contributing as a floor spacer, making smart decisions and defending multiple positions.
Brown's No. 3 ranking puts him nine spots ahead of George, giving Philadelphia the higher-ranked small forward in the outlet's evaluation. Still, George's skill set could complement Boston's system as both players begin new chapters with their respective teams.
