Raijor Dal chief Akhil Gogoi on Monday extended his party's support to the protest planned by the Zubeen Garg Fan Club at Zubeen Khetra, demanding justice for the late singer. He also called on the Assam government to file an additional chargesheet in the case, warning that the existing investigation may not deliver justice.
Addressing a press conference, Gogoi said both Raijor Dal and the Krishak Mukti Sangram Samiti fully support the fan club's decision to stage a protest at Zubeen Khetra.
He said he had previously expressed concerns that the chargesheet filed by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) would not be sufficient to ensure justice in the case. Referring to his experience with legal cases, Gogoi said the recent grant of bail to an accused was only the beginning and expressed apprehension that others could also secure bail in the coming days.
Gogoi said the government should submit an additional chargesheet at the earliest and take steps to ensure that the accused face the strictest punishment, including the death penalty where legally warranted.
He also said he wanted to participate in the fan club's protest but felt that the agitation had started much later than it should have.
In the same press conference, Gogoi said his ongoing protest over pending flood compensation had crossed 240 hours, claiming that it had set a record as a continuous agitation held when the Assam Legislative Assembly was not in session.
The Raijor Dal leader criticised Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and the state administration, alleging that neither the Chief Minister nor the Chief Secretary had visited him despite being only around 100 metres away from the protest site.
Gogoi claimed that the government was unwilling to provide compensation to around two lakh people affected by floods, alleging that the Chief Minister intended to provide relief to only around 55,000 people. He also recalled that the Chief Minister had told him that funds were not available for compensation.
Raising concerns over the condition of flood-affected residents, Gogoi alleged that not a single rupee had been released for rebuilding a flood-damaged road in Sivasagar district. He warned that people were facing severe financial distress and could be pushed towards desperation if relief measures were delayed.
He further alleged that the government had not released Rs 20 crore provided by the Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) for school repairs.
Gogoi described Sunday night as extremely difficult for his supporters, alleging that buses carrying people to Guwahati were seized and several party leaders were arrested. He also accused the police of putting up barricades to prevent villagers from leaving their homes and alleged that police personnel had visited houses in connection with the agitation.
The Raijor Dal leader said he had not been able to ascertain the whereabouts of party members Bidyut Saikia and Raju Barpatra Gohain. Despite the alleged restrictions and detentions, Gogoi said the agitation would continue. He announced that protests would be organised across the districts on Monday.
