New Update

Assam: A higher secondary student died, and his friend was left fighting for his life after the two were allegedly assaulted in the name of moral policing following a road accident in Rangia, Assam, on a night out to see Durga Puja. Angry residents gathered at Rangia police station in large numbers and demanded justice for the victims.

The dead student has been identified as Dhanjit Kalita. The other youth, Bishal, who was injured in the same attack, is undergoing treatment in a critical condition. The incident took place at Borka Panitema in the Rangia constituency.

The two friends, residents of Rangia’s Athgaon, had gone out to see the Puja when they met with an accident. According to the allegation, people at the spot did not stop to help them or to find out what had happened. Instead, they began to assault the two young men.

Relatives of the victim’s family described what happened. “Two lads from the village had gone out to see Puja when their two-wheeler was involved in an accident. However, the people around started hitting them, leaving them in a bad shape. One of them died as a result,” the family said.

The incident led to anger in Rangia. Residents of Athgaon, with more than 100 men and women among them, gathered in front of the police station in a call for a proper investigation, strict action against the guilty and justice for the victims. They laid siege to the station as a mark of protest.

Police have begun an investigation. Two men from Panitema, identified as Dipak Kalita and Mukut Deka, have been detained on suspicion of involvement. Police are also checking whether anyone else was involved and whether there was any other reason behind the assault. A search is on to identify others who took part in the violence.
