The government will form a committee led by the University Grants Commission (UGC) to review admission opportunities for English-medium students at public universities, Education and Primary and Mass Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon said today (11 October).
The committee will examine whether and how students following foreign curricula can access public university admission on equal terms with other applicants, he said at a seminar in Dhaka organised by the Alliance of Private English Medium Schools.
The committee's recommendations will serve as the basis for formulating a policy on the matter, the minister added.
Citing India and Pakistan, Milon said the neighbouring countries had clear policies for establishing equivalence between O-level and A-level certificates and their respective higher secondary qualifications.
Bangladesh was also working to ensure equivalence across different levels of education, he said.
The minister also called for stronger teaching of Bangladesh's history, Bengali language and culture in English-medium schools.
Alliance of Private English Medium Schools President Md Morshedul Islam chaired the seminar. Special Assistant Gias Uddin, UGC member Professor Abdullah Al Mamun and vice-chancellors of various universities also spoke at the event.
