As Giannis Antetokounmpo prepares for his first season with the Miami Heat following his departure from the Milwaukee Bucks, former NBA champion Shawn Marion pushed back on comparisons between himself and the two-time MVP, emphasizing the differences in their playing styles.
Speaking to Kyle Odegard of Action Network, Marion explained why he believes the comparison overlooks the distinct approaches both players brought to the power forward position.
“No, because Giannis is a center/power forward. I was a power forward, but I was an undersized power forward. I was able to play the position because I had that will and determination,” Marion said.

Marion, a four-time All-Star and 2011 NBA champion with the Dallas Mavericks, spent 16 seasons in the league, including stints with the Phoenix Suns, Heat, Toronto Raptors and Cleveland Cavaliers.
The 6-foot-7 forward averaged 15.2 points, 8.7 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.5 steals across 1,163 career regular-season games. He also shot 48.4% from the field and 33.1% from 3-point range, showcasing his versatility on both ends of the floor.
Despite dismissing the comparison, Marion praised Antetokounmpo’s accomplishments while highlighting the differences in their offensive approaches.
“He’s a special guy. A former two-time MVP, NBA champion. Our games are just totally different from each other. He’s a power, inside guy all day. He doesn’t shoot outside at all. He’s just a power guy. I’m finesse. I’m going to shoot the 3 ball and everything,” Marion said.
Giannis Antetokounmpo begins new chapter with Heat after Bucks departure

Antetokounmpo enters the 2026-27 season looking to establish himself in Miami following a blockbuster July trade that ended his 13-season tenure with Milwaukee.
The 31-year-old averaged 27.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 5.4 assists while shooting 62.4% from the field across 36 appearances during the 2025-26 campaign. Injuries limited his availability, although he remained one of the league’s most productive offensive players when healthy.
Unlike Marion, Antetokounmpo has built much of his offensive production around attacking the basket, using his size and physicality to generate opportunities near the rim.
Miami acquired Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis in exchange for a package featuring Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware, Kasparas Jakucionis and multiple draft picks.
The Heat will begin their 2026-27 regular season Wednesday, Oct. 21, when they host Anthony Edwards, LaMelo Ball and the Minnesota Timberwolves at 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPN.
