Aaron Jones Sr. has been more than serviceable as the bell cow running back for the Minnesota Vikings since Jordan Mason went on IR with a thumb injury. However, he has been listed as questionable in each of the last two games, signaling that maybe Jones isn't meant to be the lead back in 2026. Luckily for him and for Minnesota, Mason could be returning soon.
While giving his preview of the week five matchup between Minnesota and the New Orleans Saints, ESPN's Kevin Seifert gave insight into the health of Mason:
What we're hearing on the Vikings: RB Aaron Jones Sr. is entering what is likely the final week of the heaviest early-season workload in his career. He has taken 72 carries through four games, seven more than his previous high (65 in 2020) and nearly double his previous nine-year average. Backup Jordan Mason's fractured thumb, and the slow introduction for rookie Demond Claiborne, has left Jones as the Vikings' only reliable runner. Mason is expected to return after the Vikings' Week 6 bye, and while coaches have lauded Jones' grit and stamina, he will benefit from the reduced workload. -- Kevin Seifert
Mason returning will be a welcome sight, as rookie Demond Claiborne has struggled to get acclimated to the speed of the NFL. Jones could probably continue to lead the running back room, but taking some of the weight off his shoulders will be great for his longevity this season.
